Xfce, no window borders in some themes

I’m running Xfce with «Greybird» theme. Recently the window borders on the left, right and bottom sides disappeared. I am now unable to resize windows by dragging these edges. (The top border is still there, and dragable.) I am wondering what caused it, and how to fix it.

After they disappeared, I tried switching to other themes. «Greybird Compact» displays working borders. «Default-4.8» has the exact same problem, with no borders on left, right and bottom sides. I am not sure if Default-4.8 was like that before, because I’ve never used it. Other than Greybird and Default-4.8, all my themes seem to have working borders.

Any tips would be much appreciated! I would like to get Greybird working with dragable borders again.

Do you have an nvidia card and are you using the nvidia driver? If so, you might be affected by https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54168. Another related thread here.

And according to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31323, the greybird author added a workaround to the newer versions of greybird, you might want to try installing aur/xfce-theme-greybird-git.

Thank you! It is indeed an nvidia card (old 7800) with nvidia legacy drivers. The bugs you linked to match mine exactly, as I also discovered I have this title problem depicted in the bug report: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=66246

Now that I know it is a driver issue, I will just live with Greybird Compact or another functional theme. I tried to switch to the git package of Greybird, but that did not help.

I’m encountering the same problem right now (being logged as regular user or root).

xorg-server 1.16.2-1
nvidia-304xx 304.123-9
xfwm4 4.10.1-1

In my case there is no decoration on left and right side of window (and I can’t resize). Decoration on top and bottom is present (and window is resizeable by dragging it’s decoration).

I just don’t believe how many problems I have recently with arch

Настроить KDE с no window border

У меня многие приложения развернуты на полный экран — браузер, OOo, почтовик, файл-менеджер. Сейчас я пришел к выводу, что заголовок окна в этих программах мне не нужен. Хочу сделать так, чтобы по умолчанию эти программы запускались с no window border (maximized они и так сами помнят). Полностью отказаться от заголовков не могу — в GIMP, SIM и графических смотрелках они нужны.

Посему вопрос — такой параметр в Specific application settings я найти не смог, подскажите, если я плохо искал — возможно ли вообще такое сделать?

Как это нет, в specific application settings, в параметрах есть no border, все работает как ты написал

в Specific application settings вкладка Preferences. Галочку no border и выбери параметр remember

Howto install xfwm4 themes (window borders)

This is a little Howto for installing Xfwm4 themes, what means the window boarders for the XFCE Desktop Environment.

1. Download your archive and unzip it

3. copy the theme you’ve downloaded into the xfwm4 theme folder

where /home/user/mytheme stands for the path to your themes folder

4. choose the theme from the xfce settings dialog with a click on the settings icon in the panel and then a click on Window Manager.

there’s another directory where you can put themes if you don’t have write access to /usr/share/xfwm4/themes..

under your home directory, you can create a .themes directory (if you don’t already have one). Then under that, there are two ways you organize themes. One is the old way, and one is the new way, and I’m not sure which is which, but I currently have a number of xfwm4 themes installed here:

So thats one way, application name then theme name. The other way is theme name, and then have applications under that. I have one theme like that right now, under

/.themes/FallWithMe, and there is a gtk-2.0 and Openbox-3 folder under those containing a theme suite.

Xfce supports both styles right now, I’m not sure if one will be discontinued or not.

under your home directory, you can create a .themes directory (if you don’t already have one). Then under that, there are two ways you organize themes.

I have a /share/themes folder that I symlink in my home directory, that way I have them saved en masse no matter which distro I’m running. It’s much better, for me, to keep my downloaded themes out of /usr, as that’s reserved for installed programs/themes (in Gentoo, anyway).

AFAIK old themes are still compatible.

for me it works with having new themes pixmaps in /usr/share/themes/[themenamehere]/xfwm4/*

does the theme have a themerc?

In case you don’t see theme you just installed on the Settings Manager/window manager list, you might check your permissions on the theme’s directory (/usr/share/themes/ ) and its contents.

Theme directories all have rwxr-xr-x privileges (at least on my Debian system) while the contents of /usr/share/themes/ /xfwm by default have rw-r—r— privileges.

$cd /usr/share/themes
$ ls -l

Some themes I have come across didn’t come with these privileges — I had to modify them manually to get the theme to appear on the window manager list. The following changes permissions of the theme directory in /usr/share, its xfwm subdirectory and the contents of the xfwm subdir (the actual theme files):

Firstly logging in as su does not work. the password is revoked and its the only one here.
Secondly, why is it so hard? Why can’t I extract from desctop to usr/share/themes and be prompted for a password? the form is there on the file manager tool so where is the password promt? Managing a webserver in Joomla is easier!

Несмотря на то, что название изначально расшифровывалось как XForms Common Environment, сейчас оно не является аббревиатурой. Начиная с 3 версии, оболочка базируется на библиотеке GTK со всеми вытекающими. Xfce является одной из самых популярных оболочек Linux . В основном благодаря тому, что она имеет скромные системные требования и подойдёт даже для слабых компьютеров. Её можно встретить в нескольких легковесных дистрибутивах.

Некоторые пользователи предпочитают использовать Xfce даже на производительном ПК. В ней ценят простоту и отзывчивость. Даже если вы используете Ubuntu, то можете установить Xfce и наслаждаться её скоростью.

Оболочка Xfce минималистична, но при этом даёт вам всё необходимое. Однако, по умолчанию она выглядит и ощущается устаревшей. К счастью, вы можете настроить оболочку, придав системе современный и красивый внешний вид. При этом потребление ресурсов останется на прежнем уровне.

Как сделать XFCE красивым и современным?

Давайте рассмотрим несколько способов улучшить внешний вид и ощущения от оболочки Xfce. По умолчанию рабочий стол с Xfceвыглядит примерно так:

Согласитесь, изначально Xfceсмотрится довольно скучно. Чтобы исправить ситуацию, мы изменим тему, пакет иконок и док-панель.

1. Изменение тем в Xfce

Первым делом вам стоит перейти на сайт xfce-look.org и скачать понравившуюся тему. После этого распакуйте тему в папку .themes в домашнем каталоге. Если папки не существует, то просто создайте её. С иконками аналогичная ситуация, для них нужна папка .icons .

Теперь откройте Настройки > Внешний вид > Стиль , чтобы выбрать установленную тему. Выйдите из учётной записи и войдите обратно, чтобы применить все изменения. Выбор большой, но не все темы выполнены качественно, поэтому советуем ознакомиться с лучшими темами для Xfce .

Так как Xfce использует GTK, то можете применить любую хорошую тему GTK для GNOME.

2. Изменение иконок в Xfce

На сайте xfce-look.org вы также можете скачать пакеты значков. Установка будет аналогична темам. Сначала распакуйте иконки в папку .icons в домашнем каталоге, а затем примените их перейдя в Настройки > Внешний вид > Значки .

Неплохим выбором будет пакет иконок Moka . Особенно он понравится тем, кому материальный дизайн кажется слишком простым. Кроме этого пакета можете выбрать и другой из нашего списка лучших иконок .

Опционально: Установка и поиск тем/иконок через Synaptic

Возможно вы заметили, что сайт предлагает установить тему, но для этого используется устаревшее приложение, которое может не заработать на некоторых дистрибутивах. Поэтому лучше воспользоваться проверенным методом.

Если вы хотите автоматизировать процесс установки тем и иконок, то советуем установить менеджер пакетов Synaptic. Вы можете найти тему в интернете, а для её установки воспользоваться менеджером Synaptic. Сначала установите менеджер командой:

sudo apt install synaptic

Теперь откройте его и нажмите Поиск . Введите название найденной темы, после этого появится поисковая выдача соответствующих пакетов. Выберите необходимый и нажмите Применить . Загрузка и установка пройдут автоматически, вам останется только применить тему.

3. Изменение обоев рабочего стола Xfce

Этот пункт является самым простым и очевидным, но всё же не менее действенным.

Щёлкните правой кнопкой по рабочему столу, выберите Свойства , а затем во вкладке Фон установите любимую картинку.

4. Изменение док-панелиXfce

Стандартная док-панель довольно удобна и отлично выполняет свою функцию. Но её внешний вид оставляет желать лучшего. Тем не менее, если вы хотите улучшить док-панель и получить больше возможностей по настройке, то можете установить другую панель.

Plank является одной из самых простых и легковесных панелей, при этом имеющей широкой спектр настроек. Используйте эту команду, чтобы установить Plank:

sudo apt install plank

Если пакет не нашёлся в стандартном репозитории, то подключите этот репозиторий PPA и повторите попытку:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/docky

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt install plank

Перед использованием Plankследует удалить стандартную док-панель. Щёлкните по панели и в настройках выберите Удалить .

После этого просто запускайте панель. Но лучше сразу добавьте её в автозагрузку.

Панель использует те же иконки, что и сама система. Поэтому пакет иконок повлияет и на Plank. Узнать подробнее о Plank вы можете в нашем материале .

Заключение

Xfce – это лёгкая, быстрая, глубоко настраиваемая оболочка. Если вы ограничены в системных ресурсах, то она станет хорошим выбором. Вы без проблем настроите её под себя. Вот пример настроенной оболочки:
