Stuck at «Preparing to install updates 25%» — Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586.

The early November security updates installed without an issue on my Windows 10 Pro 64-bits.

The first Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586, however, got stuck at:

«Preparing to install updates 25%»

This is what I tried before to install the upgrade:

• Removed SD cards and external hard disks;
• Restored all (privacy) Settings to default.
• Ran the WindowsUpdate Troubleshooter which indicated it fixed something (never seen this do anything before, though).
• Tried WindowsUpdate 8-10 times;
• Used the Media Creation tool to install a fresh update, which got stuck at 40% total installation after 2 hrs, so I had to reboot the machine and abort the update. Restoring the previous Windows version also took forever, so I used an image instead.

All in all, this update story is not pretty.

Is there an issue with this update or is something else going on that I need to fix?

Method 1: Perform a Clean boot and try to update.

Perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

1) Which update are you trying to install?

Method 1: Perform clean boot on the computer

You need to perform a clean boot to identify the faulty or conflicting program on your computer.
Clean Boot Troubleshooting.

1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the
password, Or click Continue.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup items check box.
4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.

Reset the computer to start as usual.
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

Try to reset windows update and check if issue persists.

Windows Update stuck on preparing to install

Does anyone know what i should do or what could be the problem when my windows update is stuck on preparing to install? It has been like that for 3 weeks now.

Windows update stuck at Preparing to Install when dowloading Windows 10

Like a lot of others, my windows 10 update was stuck at Preparing to Install.

I should mention that the download started of its own accord (I did reserve my upgrade a couple of months back so maybe that had something to do with it). I did not force the download to start.

I should mention that I attempted to stop the download and perform the upgrade using the Windows 10 media creation tool. However, the progress bar while using the tool remained at 0% and I assumed that Windows Update was the culprit as the progress bar was still at around 30% (after the download had finished) at Preparing to Install.

I attempted to change the date and timezone as well but that did not work either.

I then proceeded to delete all the files in the Windows/Software Distribution / Downloads folder. Then I attempted to stop Windows Update using the administrative tools > View local services section in Control Panel. Unfortunately, I encountered an error which said that Windows Update could not be stopped.

Now I am stuck on my PC, with the Get Windows 10 app telling me the download is in progress, Windows Update telling me for the past 3 hours that it is preparing files for installation.

The specifications of my Asus laptop are:
Core i7 4500 U 1.8ghz
8GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM
1 TB HDD
Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit

I have around 194 GB of free space in my C drive as well.
