На данный момент операционная система Windows 10 может работать как с 32-разрядными, так и с 64-разрядными процессорными архитектурами. Однако большинство современных ПК поставляются с 64-разрядной версией Windows 10.

С ростом доступности 64-разрядных компьютеров и спроса на 64-разрядную Windows 10, Microsoft решила постепенно прекратить поддержку 32-разрядных систем для будущих устройств. Компания объявила, что майское обновление Windows 10 May 2020 Update не будет предложено в 32-разрядной версии для партнёров-производителей.

Microsoft заявила: Начиная с Windows 10 версии 2004 все новые системы Windows 10 будут требовать использования 64-разрядных сборок и Microsoft больше не будет выпускать 32-разрядных сборок для распространения OEM».

Таким образом, Windows 10 May 2020 Update потенциально станет первым шагом к избавлению от 32-разрядных операционных систем и приложений. Тем не менее, если не считать производителей и новых ПК, другие каналы распространения будут включать 32-разрядную версию для «различных сценариев установки».

So native UEFI install of Windows 10 32-bit is supported even on intel core i3/5/7 or its AMD equivalents processors?

because I’ve asked in different forums and here’s a quote of the answer I’ve got:

«A 64-bit UEFI PC can only boot 64-bit versions of Windows. A 32-bit PC can only boot 32-bit versions of Windows. In some cases, while in legacy BIOS mode, you may be able to run 32-bit Windows on a 64-bit PC, assuming the manufacturer supports 32-bit legacy BIOS mode on the PC.

I mean that unless you are using Atom-based tablets and SOC’s with 32bit UEFI ROM’s,your options will be A)Install Windows x64 (aka the Right option) and B)Install 32bit in BIOS mode(aka legacy mode)»

It’s just so confusing because even Microsoft’s technet site notes that:

« While in UEFI mode, the Windows version must match the PC architecture. A 64-bit UEFI PC can only boot 64-bit versions of Windows. A 32-bit PC can only boot 32-bit versions of Windows. In some cases, while in legacy BIOS mode, you may be able to run 32-bit Windows on a 64-bit PC, assuming the manufacturer supports 32-bit legacy BIOS mode on the PC.»

So the way I understand it is that Native UEFI install of Windows 10 32-bit only works with mobile devices ( Atom-based tablets) and Desktop (SOC’s) where in its processor are mobile processors Intel Atom based.

Otherwise, if you’re using a 64-bit PC, which I assume means are the ones using the «real» Desktop/laptop x64 processors (intel core i3/5/7 or its AMD equivalent), then Native UEFI install of Windows 10 32-bit won’t work with it and you have to use BIOS mode(aka legacy mode).

So, which is the case then? Does Windows 10 32-bit truly can install in Native UEFI mode (not CSM/legacy BIOS mode) even in Desktop PC/laptop with intel core i3/5/7 or its AMD equivalent based processors?

With the release of Windows 10 November Update (1511), and later versions such as the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (1607), you can switch directly to a 64 bit version of Windows 10 with or without a product key.

• Switching to Windows 10 64 bit is free, you don’t have to pay for it. As long as you have a qualifying Windows 7 or 8 or Windows 10 license, you are entitled to use it.
• Switching requires that you perform a new installation, that means files, applications and settings will be deleted.

RIP: Microsoft to drop support for Windows 10 on 32-bit systems

Microsoft has stated that future versions of Windows 10, starting with the May 2020 Update, will no longer be available as 32-bit builds on new OEM computers.

An update to the Windows 10 Minimum hardware requirements document, Microsoft states that starting with Windows 10 2004, new OEM computers will be required to use 64-bit builds of the operating system.

«Beginning with Windows 10, version 2004, all new Windows 10 systems will be required to use 64-bit builds and Microsoft will no longer release 32-bit builds for OEM distribution. This does not impact 32-bit customer systems that are manufactured with earlier versions of Windows 10; Microsoft remains committed to providing feature and security updates on these devices, including continued 32-bit media availability in non-OEM channels to support various upgrade installation scenarios.»

This change does not mean that Microsoft is no longer supporting 32-bit builds, as they will continue to do so in a limited manner.

Microsoft states that they will are still committed to supporting users running older hardware and will continue to make 32-bit media available in non-OEM channels.

Furthermore, Microsoft will continue to offer feature updates and security updates for versions of Windows running on 32-bit hardware.

Few still use Windows 10 32-bit

Microsoft does not offer statistics on the number of devices continuing to use Windows 10 32-bit, but the Steam Hardware & Software Survey: April 2020 shows that it is in limited use.

According to Steam’s hardware survey, only 0.20% use Windows 10 32-bit while 86.08% use Windows 10 64-bit.

While Steam’s statistics focus on gamers who are likely running on newer equipment, it does give us an indication that the amount of people continuing to use Windows 32-bit is small.

With few users using continuing to use Windows 10 32-bit and almost all new equipment having 64-bit support, this change eliminates a whole range of potential issues and development conflicts that may arise by supporting both architectures.

This change by Microsoft, though, is essentially killing off 32-bit Windows as older versions reach end of support, and new versions are released.
