Quick Tip: Use Your Mac as a Wi-Fi Hotspot and More

There are Wi-Fi hotspots and networks floating around everywhere these days from your local coffee shops to far-away airports. But what if you find yourself without a wireless connection when five friends need to get online? Let’s find out how to create a Wi-Fi hotspot from your wired connection with your Mac! We will also be covering how to set up computer-to-computer networks for sharing files, screens, and more. No routers required, we promise.

Sharing a Wi-Fi Hotspot

All you need to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for your other Wi-Fi-enabled computers, phones, and tablets is a wired ethernet connection. You can check that you have this enabled by opening up System Preferences and going to the Network section.

Next, head to Sharing in System Preferences. Take a look at the «Internet Sharing» sub-menu and be sure you have the «Wi-Fi» option checked, as shown below. You may have to unlock the preferences by clicking on the lock icon at the bottom-left of the window.

Click on «Wi-Fi Options» at the bottom-right of the screen and then you will find a popup that allows you to set the name, channel, and password of your ad-hoc network.

Now to start the network, check the «Internet Sharing» box. A new menu will popup asking you if you are sure you want to start it. You may get a popup asking if you would like to turn on your Wi-Fi. Click «Turn Wi-Fi On» if you currently have your Wi-Fi connection off. Click «Start» afterwards and now you have successfully started your own ad-hoc network! You can now have other Wi-Fi enabled computers connect to your Mac.

Enjoy sharing your Internet connection with others around you! You can turn off the network by just unchecking the «Internet Sharing» box in the same Sharing section.

Computer-to-Computer Networks

So now you can set up an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network to share your Internet connection, but you can also quickly setup a wireless connection between computers without any network connection at all. You can do this if you want to share files, share screens, and more (you cannot connect to the Internet this way, however! Check above to do that.)

First of all, click on your Wi-Fi menubar icon and get to the option to «Create Network. «. Click it and you will get a popup asking for some information.

Fill in the Network name, choose a channel, and set a password if you would like some security. Note that the password must be a certain length if you choose to add one (it states how many characters in the prompt).

Click okay, and now your network is set up! Go onto your other Mac or other device and you can now connect to the Wi-Fi-based network just as you would any other Wi-Fi connection. Any computer on the network will be connected even without an Internet connection. One thing you could do now is to look at files on other computers in the Finder sidebar and transfer them easily and wirelessly (however, you may want to consider OS X’s AirDrop feature on OS X 10.7+ for that).

In Conclusion

Hopefully, you won’t end up in a situation in which there are no Wi-Fi hotspots for everybody to share, but in case you do, it can be incredibly simple to setup a sharing system on your Mac. Personally, this system works great when I’m traveling and only have a single cable to connect a dozen different gadgets. Everybody gets to connect to the Internet from just one cord!

Turn your Mac into a WiFi hotspot using OS X’s internet sharing

Have you ever been in a situation where you had multiple devices that needed to connect to the internet, but only one available source (like an ethernet cable or cellular air card)? Sharing your internet connection is only a few clicks away.

Although free WiFi access points are spreading like wildfire, let’s say you’re on vacation and the hotel you’re staying at only offers internet via a single ethernet port in the wall. It may not be a big deal if you’re traveling alone with one laptop, but you’re most likely staying with friends or family that have their own technology addictions to feed. So what are you going to do about this little situation where there are a mix of PCs, Macs, and iPhones clamoring for contact with the outside world? Patiently take turns? Ha! Good luck relaxing on that vacation.

The answer is in the Sharing pane of System Preferences on your Mac. Mac OS X actually lets you turn your computer into a mock wireless router for others to pick up the signal and connect to the internet. It’s an easy and secure way to get a variety of devices online when WiFi isn’t available. Here’s how to do it :

1. Open System Preferences and go to the Sharing pane under the Internet & Network heading.

2. On the list of services to the left, select Internet Sharing. Don’t check it quite yet — there’s a few options that need to be set first.

3. Depending on what your current internet source is, select it from the menu next to “Share your connection from.” As you can see below, I chose Built-in Ethernet since that is how my Mac is getting online at the moment.

4. In the “To computers using” box, select and check AirPort from the list.

5. While it is not required, it’s generally a good idea to lock down the WiFi hotspot you’re creating with a password just in case unwanted visitors are tempted to steal your bandwidth. Click on the AirPort Options button to configure these security settings.

6. In the window that pops up, type a basic Network Name and check the “Enable encryption (using WEP)” box. Enter an easy to remember (but not easy to guess) password in the boxes below. Remember you will have to provide this password to anyone you want to have access to your Mac’s shared wireless network. Click OK.

7. The configuration portion is finished, so the only thing left to do is check the box next to Internet Sharing and enable it. A confirmation message will appear — click Start to complete the process.

Now that your Mac’s internet is being transmitted from your AirPort WiFi card to other devices, you should see an icon like the one pictured at the very beginning of this tutorial in your menu bar. If you do, you’re in business! Virtually any tech gadget with built-in wireless networking (including Windows PCs, iPhones, iPod touches, PSPs, and of course other Macs) should be able to connect successfully when the security password you set is entered.

Self Defense Is Vital.

Everywhere you go your net activities are being watched and recorded. This program effectively hides you IP. I’ve tried several VPN services and this one has been the easiest to use and most customer friendly that I’ve found. I’ve seen no reduction in download or upload speeds. The only downside to this, or any VPN is that some sites won’t allow access via VPN. I’ve only run into one that I care about, but it is simple to disconnect, you just need to be careful to exit from any sites that collect data (i.e. Anything Google relative. well.. almost everything). I disconnect from VPN, reboot, open only the site in question, take care of business, then open VPN and reboot. Bit of a pain but my system is free of the focused advertising and whatnot.

Bottom line, as an Apple user of over 30 years (another company surprisingly enough considering their leftist mindset, which respects user privacy) I am completely satisfied with Hotspot Shield.

Oops, the app cannot be used

Before downloading this vpn, I have used other types of vpn, but most of them don’t provide good service, let us visit the website we want to visit, so I worked hard to find a match on APP STORE I expected the vpn, so I found this vpn.
