5. Kill commercials, inside or outside WMC

If you wanted commercials, you’d watch live TV. If you want them gone from your media center experience, and you don’t mind the subtle karmic shift in doing so, there’s apps to tackle that, both inside and outside WMC. Lifextender does a great job of automating commercial stripping, but hasn’t been updated to run all that well in Windows 7 yet—or so our commenters have noted (it should work fine for Vista and earlier Windows editions). On the other hand, DVRMSToolbox is a stand-alone program, so those with Windows Media Center setups where getting outside the main media window isn’t hard can bulk-strip their commercials. About a year ago I evaluated WMC thoroughly — we were coming from BeyondTV with analog cable, ready to make the digital cable + HDTV switch. The big problem is that WMC doesn’t support digital cable (yes, I know about cable cards, but the interwebs are full of people that have tried and failed at that solution).

After much agonizing/analysis, we decided on the Tivo HD with dual cable-cards, and we haven’t regretted it. The interface is seamless, the reliability is perfect, the maintenance is zero, and even with the subscription charges, the break-even point versus buying even a mid-priced HTPC ($600) is five years out (at which point, we’d be due for a new PC anyway).

So here’s the feature-by-feature comparison of Tivo to WMC features from this post:

This isn’t meant to come off as trolling («get yer Tivo out of arr WMC post!»), but if someone asked me which to buy, I would tell them to buy the Tivo HD. OTOH, if you’ve already set up a WMC, by all means take advantage of the great power-ups of this article.
