Enable Old Classic Volume Control in Windows 10

Windows 10 introduced a new style of items and their panes/flyouts which open from the notification area. All of the applets which open from the system tray are different now. This includes the Date/Time pane, the Action Center, the Network pane and even the volume control! Once you click the sound icon in the system tray, the new volume indicator will appear on the screen. If you do not like how it looks and works, it is possible to restore the previous sound volume control which was available in Windows 8 and Windows 7 with a simple Registry tweak. In this article, we will see how to enable the old volume control in Windows 10.

To enable the old classic Volume Control in Windows 10, follow these steps:

Open Registry Editor.
Go to the following Registry key:

Tip: See how to jump to the desired Registry key with one click.
Create the MTCUVC subkey if you do not have it.

Create a new 32-bit DWORD value named EnableMtcUvc and leave its value as 0.

Sign out and log in back to your Windows account. Alternatively, you can just restart the Explorer shell. Actually, for many users this tweak works instantly, so try to click the speaker systray icon first.

Thank you for the tip, for a desktop user it is still better option.

Why new Volume control is bad? I can‘t understand why a lot of people are so strictly attached to old-fashioned Windows elements.

You can’t control the volume of every program separately…

Because ‘up’ is for ‘up’ (louder) and ‘down’ is for ‘down’ (quieter) 🙂

Personal preference, but the old one would also show the dynamic range for each track so it’s handy as a quick guide for anyone interested in DJing or producing.

I think it is because there is no mixer in the new style.

It’s simple, the new one has no “Mixer” link nor can you click on the Speaker icon to open Sound Properties. And the new open opens slower.

What the hell. So the new one drops the Mixer option completely? Wow just wow.

You can access the mixer option by right clicking the sound option.

So this tweak worked fine, but why doesn’t the mixer setting stay open the way it did in Win 7? I always want to see the different sound sources so I can easily tune them they way I need it (for example when skyping or watching a movie while playing a game). As it is now I always have to click on the sound icon then click on “mixer” and then I finally can change the levels… Is there any way as of now to change this to the old style?

It might only be a single additional click, but if you’re a gamer who constantly uses at least 2 different sound sources, it is annoying as hell. If I find more stuff like this that I absolutely hate, I might even switch back to Win 7…

Still, I went back to Win 7 for now as some features and programs don’t seem to work that well right now. Hopefully patches and service packs will fix this soon.

What would have possessed MS to change the volume control ? It is moronic and unnecessary screwing around like this that puts people off software companies. Ridiculous.

I was having trouble with the new volume control failing to pop up after a while when my laptop was connected and then reconnected to various projectors over a period of time. This then made it difficult to adjust the sound volume without having to open other sound apps on the screen (not what you want when giving presentations).

This fixed the problem. :o)

i can’t find the file MTCUVC

Create it yourself. It is a subkey, i.e. “folder”.

I needed this to unmute Chrome because apparently the new volume control didn’t have the sound mixer anymore. Now that I unmuted it, it would like to have the new one back. How do I undo it?

Delete the parameter you created.

it worked great, only complaint is that there is no animation for current playing media, ie a little shadow that bounced inside the mixer box to depict playing levels. any fix for this?

* im a dummy, i fixed it myself by editing windows for best appearance. Doing this brings back bouncy shadow – nvm you guys XD

This worked for me, however it doesn’t open the mixer by default, only the master volume control. Is there any way I could make it so that the mixer is opened by default?

I tried this through Winaero Tweaker and it didn’t work so I reverted the setting to disable. Now my keyboard volume controls don’t work! What should I do?

This tweak is not related to volume control buttons on the keyboard. It doesn’t affect any hotkey or hardware button.
Ensure that you haven’t changed some other settings or not running an app that intercept these buttons. Also, your keyboard may require drivers installed in order to get the buttons working.
Also, I am curious how it didn’t work for you.
I just tried it in the latest build of Windows 10. The tweak works (applied from Winaero Tweaker). See the following screenshot:

I’m on Windows 10 Version 1703, build 15063.540

I will try reverting all tweak settings to see if that solves the problem…

Tried resetting everything. Didn’t work. What should I do?

I don’t know, since I don’t know what exactly the cause of the issue.

Hi Sergey. I ended up resetting my system. In the process of doing so, the system automatically updated to a newer build (15063.608) and now everything seems to work fine. The volume control has actually changed and my keyboard controls now work. Maybe it was just some sort of odd incompatibility with that particular system build.

I am happy to hear that the problem is gone.

I love the old volume control, this with the old battery indicator is great. Is there a way to get the old Wi-Fi control??
I think it would be handy to have these grouped.

I went into control panel, large icons and clicked sound. It brought up the old Win 7 controls. Yippee !

Windows 10 Taskbar Volume Control not working

The Volume Control icon in the system tray is the quickest way to control the volume on your Windows 10 PC. However if after a recent update or a software installation, it no longer responds to mouse clicks, whether it be a left-click or a right-click, you have a problem. Many have reported that the icon does highlight and show the volume level if you hover the cursor over it, but clicking on the icon has no effect. In Windows 10, it is also the quickest way to change the audio output, especially when you need to change from speakers to an earphone for your privacy.

If your Windows 10 Taskbar Volume Control icon has stopped working, and when you click on the volume icon nothing happens and you are not able to change the volume then this post has some working fixes that will help you. While the audio works fine, you will not be able to control the volume of the PC from the volume control icon.

Windows 10 Volume Control not working

If you are wondering what exactly is the problem, then its probably has something to do with UI interaction. Many time icons on the taskbar also behave the same. You can mouse hover, but nothing happens when you click on it. The volume icon problem doesn’t seem to affect the actual audio from the PC. It works fine, and you can use hardware on the keyboard or the PC to control volume, but the software doesn’t work. This is very inconvenient for those who connect their laptop to a big display, and the device is not around them most of the time.

Our suggestions are:

Restart Windows Explorer
Restart Audio Services
Update Audio Driver
Run Audio Troubleshooter

Lets us see them in detail.

1] Restart Windows Explorer

This has worked for many consumers. If anything gets stuck on the taskbar or system tray, this is the best way to revive them.

Right-click on the taskbar, and select Task Manager.
Under Processes, look for Windows Explorer
Right-click and choose to restart.
Wait for everything to complete and the user interface to refresh. You should see Taskbar disappearing, and then reappearing. This will reload the whole UI, and give you access to the Volume icon. This time it will work.

2] Restart Audio Services

Type services.msc in the Run prompt.
In the Services list, find Windows Audio, right-click on it, and go to Properties.
Make sure to change the Startup Type to Automatic.
Click on the Stop button, and once it has stopped, Start it again.
Restart your computer, and check if you will be able to access the volume icon on the taskbar.

3] Update Audio Driver

Run “mmsys.cpl” in a command prompt. Right-click on the sound icon in your system tray and select “Playback Devices”.

When done, in the Sound Control Panel, verify which device is your system default and return to your desktop.

Next, type “Device Manager” in your search box and click on the Device Manager app. Expand the “Sound, video, and game controllers” tab.

Now, right-click your default audio device driver, and click Update Driver Software.

4] Run Audio Troubleshooter

Open Windows 10 Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot. Run the Playing Audio Troubleshooter.

You can always temporarily fix these types of the problem using DISM tool, and the system file checker (SFC), but it’s not guaranteed to work 100%, and you may have to try it again after you reboot your PC.

Lastly, if nothing works, its always a good idea to restore your Windows 10 PC to last good condition.
