Question: Q: request timed out trying to update MacOS Mojave
I’m trying to update my Macbook pro and it keeps failing when attempting to download the update for MacOS Mojave 10.4.1
Anyone else having the same issue? Any solutions / suggestions? Much appreciated!
I get a prompt message saying:
«The request timed out.» An error occurred while installing the selected updates.
Also, here is the error log message in /var/log/install.log

Are you downloading the correct file? If you already have 10.14 installed, then you want to Download macOS Mojave 10.14.1 Update .
Nov 28, 2018 1:28 PM
Yes, I’m trying to update to 10.14.1
Nov 28, 2018 1:34 PM
Is the problem with the download or the installation? If the former try the link I provided earlier.
Nov 28, 2018 1:39 PM
Thanks for the link. I clicked on the download button and the status icon on the browser tab keeps spinning attempting to download, but it never does and the page eventually times out.
Nov 28, 2018 1:59 PM
P.S. Is there a way to download 10.14 Installer somewhere? So I can create a bootable USB with that and try format / reinstall?
Nov 28, 2018 2:01 PM
Did you try clicking on the Download Link where it says, «Download macOS Mojave . «? I think what you are looking at is part of your browser, not the Apple site to which you are connected.
Nov 28, 2018 2:15 PM
Yes, I specifically said «I clicked on the download button» You can try it yourself.
btw, do you know if there is way to download the 10.14 MacOS installer so I can create a bootable USB installer?

May I suggest you try using Safari instead of the Mozilla app you pictured. See if you get better results.
Bootable USB Installers for OS X Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, and Sierra
First, review this introductory article: Create a bootable installer for macOS . Second, read this How To outline for creating a bootable macOS installer. Simply use the Terminal command by copying and pasting the command line for the version of macOS from the list below. You will need an 8GB or larger USB flash drive that has been partitioned and formatted for use with OS X as well as an installer for the desired macOS version that you have previously downloaded from the App Store.
Drive Partition and Format
- Open Disk Utility in the Utilities’ folder.
- After Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry with the mfg.’s ID and size) from the side list.
- Click on the Erase tab in the Disk Utility toolbar. Name the drive, «MyVolume».
- In the drop down panel set the partition scheme to GUID. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
- Click on the Apply button and wait for the Done button to activate. When it does click on it.
- Quit Disk Utility.
Create Installer Open the Terminal in the Utilities’ folder. Choose the appropriate command line (in red) depending upon what OS X installer you want. Paste that entire command line from below at the Terminal’s prompt:
*Command for macOS Mojave : sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Mojave.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/MyVolume
*Command for macOS High Sierra : sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/MyVolume
Command for macOS Sierra : sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/MyVolume —applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app
Command for El Capitan : sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/MyVolume —applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app
Command for Yosemite : sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/MyVolume —applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app
Command for Mavericks : sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/MyVolume —applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app
Press RETURN. You will be asked for your admin password. It will not echo to the Terminal window. Then press RETURN again. Wait for the return of the Terminal prompt signifying the process has completed. It takes quite some time to finish. Be patient. * If your Mac is using macOS Sierra or earlier, include the —applicationpath argument. The Sierra and El Capitan commands show the proper format of this argument. The bootable installer can be used to install the selected version of macOS. Shut the computer down. Insert your flash drive into a USB port. Start the computer like so:
Boot Using OPTION key
- Restart the computer.
- Immediately after the chime press and hold down the «OPTION» key.
- Release the key when the Boot Manager screen appears.
- Select the disk icon for the USB flash drive.
- Click on the arrow button under the disk icon.

I’ve solved the problem! But thanks anyways! Yeah I did that numerous time, with the internet mode and tried reinstall os x but to no avail with the request timed out. I looked up online on how to fix this issue but there wasnt any direct solution for this. So i tried solving it on my own with the help of the internet, i used my sister’s mac book and reformat an unused 8gb thumbdrive using disk utility, used the terminal to install macOs Sierra (cos i was desperate and it was the only one in her mac). It took around 20 mins for it to finish uploading to the thumbdrive. Then I eject and put it in my Mac. Used the recovery mode or internet mode either one is the same, and go to the disk utility and restore your main hard disk by selecting the thumbdrive which contains the macOs Sierra and restore to main hard disk (the one at the most top, drag it to the empty box). Then it says something about restarting your mac for it to work or something like that. It took me a couple of tries for it to make sense to me before finally I restart and my mac has an option to install on macOs Sierra! It took me about 6 hours because im a noob and I kept trying other methods online but yeah my problem solved!

Question: Q: Software update request timed out
When my laptop tries to look for software updates within the Mac App Store app, it always says «Request Timed Out». I know the problem, but I don’t know the solution.
Back when I was running Snow Leopard, I had a Mac mini server that was using Apple’s software update server. It was also managing computers on my home network, and it changed the software update server location on all my family’s Macs to my home server. One day, the Mac mini server died, and I never replaced it. All my other Macs were able to revert to Apple’s SUS, but my Macbook Pro never did.
Under Snow Leopard, I would run these commands:
sudo defaults delete /Library/Managed\ Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
sudo defaults delete /Library/Managed\ Preferences/Brian/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
And under Lion, I had to add these commands:
sudo rm -R -v /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService
sudo rm -R -v /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.kerberos
sudo rm -R -v /Library/Managed\ Preferences
sudo rm -R -v /Library/Caches/*
After running these, I could do a software update. But, after a day, the setting would always revert to looking for my home server. I was never able to figure out how to permanently change this setting.
Under Mountain Lion, this no longer works. I cannot contact Apple’s SUS. Does anyone know how to permanently set the SUS location to Apple, or even temporarily?

Question: Q: Apple Music ‘The request timed out’
My Apple Music appears to be working well and functions perfectly when I am connected to wifi, but when I try to play a song using cellular data it does not play and I’m left with the message saying ‘the request timed out’. How can I fix this? I’m running low on phone storage and many of my songs are not downloaded, so it it very frustrating not being able to listen to music when I’m out. I’ve checked that my data is enabled for Apple Music, and hard reset my phone but nothing seems to work.

My Apple Music is currently only working over Wifi. Just upgraded from a 6s. I have exhausted all troubleshooting options. Streamed everything in my library. Upgraded. nothing. Help.

Same on XR on Bell. coming from X. Hard reset, Logout/Login iCloud and AppleID. still ‘Request Timed Out’ when attempting to DL music in Cellular Data (100% good on WiFi)

Same here. Only works on wifi but not cellular with Bell.
I’m suspecting the problem lies with Bell.
Mar 12, 2019 10:11 PM
Same for me. I am using iphone 7, iOS 12.1.2 — i think the issue started when I upgraded to this iOS from 11.xx. I called Bell and they thought it was an Apple issue. Based on all the cellular issues Apple is having with iOS 12.1.x I tend to think it is an Apple issue. Extremely frustrating.
Anyone else getting this on a different cellular network than Bell?
Mar 13, 2019 9:32 AM
I was able to Resolve my issue by scrolling down in settings andSigning Out of «iTunes & App Stores»
(NOT My main Apple ID, iTunes & App Store at the top, which I had done previously)
When I signed back in, many of my Apple Music downloads were gone, but the App now allows me to DL over Cellular Data.
Hope this Helps
iPhone XR on Bell

Tried all troubleshooting (signing out of iCloud — Signing out of iTunes & App Store), still no change to issue. Unable to stream or download over cellular. Wifi is good. Unable to PING apple music. Soundcloud, YouTube an all other streaming works perfectly.
Is this happening to any other networks? Or isolated to a port which is not open in the phones software?
iPhone XR — OS12.1.4 on Bell Network.

No, that did not work for me. It ended up screwing up my settings and my playlists disappeared. After investigating i found that when i signed back in it turned off my icloud music library in my music settings. I turned it back on and then it kept going off by itself. After some persistence i finally got it to stay on and my playlists then reloaded.
It is ridiculous -i can search and find songs and albums in Apple Music when on cellular but it will not download or stream unless on WiFi. Extremely frustrating. It worked just fine not so long ago.
Mar 13, 2019 4:59 PM
As of 30 minutes ago I am able to stream music. Not sure what the resolve was, but it’s working.
no news from apple was good news I guess. Hope everyone else can stream over cellular now.
Mar 13, 2019 5:56 PM
No such luck. Are you sure? If you start listening on WiFi and then go to cellular it will still play for a while since the song is at least partially downloaded. Or if you had already downloaded the song it will play from your phone.
Mar 13, 2019 8:04 PM
Having the same issue. I am with Bell and it’s lasted about 3 weeks non-stop. Both streaming and downloading songs absolutely doesn’t work over LTE. Works fine with Wi-Fi. Also noticed that apps won’t download through LTE either, only Wi-Fi. so issue not limited to Apple Music.
Don’t suggest any troubleshooting method because I can guarantee you I’ve tried it already lol. No help from either Apple or Bell when I’ve reached out to support. The fact that a subscription based platfrom has been essentially down for almost a month is criminal — I should get this month’s subscription reimbursed.
