What is «secd» process?

I wonder what secd process does under OSX Yosemite. I am pretty sure I have seen this process running in earlier MacOS versions, but I don’t remember it gobbling up all the available memory so boldly.

I have three computers running Yosemite, each with a different config. All three have been up for a duration of three days to one week. Here is a run down of what secd has achieved:

• On MacBookAir 2011 with 4GB of memory, 700MB allocated to secd
• On iMac 2008 with 6GB of memory, 2GB allocated to secd
• On iMac 2011 with 12GB of memory, 4GB allocated to secd

On all three computers secd is the largest process in memory (larger than kernel task ) and I suspect it plays a role in the slowdown I have recently experienced with the arrival of Yosemite. I know for sure that the process expands in memory to inordinate sizes and frees up memory when I need it somewhere else. The only issue is that it is not as quick in freeing up memory and most of the time performance suffers before the process realizes it has to retreat.

My search around the web didn’t come to a solid conclusion as for what the process is, and why it should be so huge. I guess I am not the only one experiencing this. Any tip is appreciated.

As suggested below secd has to do with Apple Keychain. Here are the files and ports that the process keeps open when active (on MacBookAir):

What is not clear is what the process does to all the memory it occupies, and why it inflates so much.

If it’s not apparent, this is just a guess. But hopefully it gives you some leads.

First, here’s what you can figure out just from the program name. If you run the command /bin/ls /usr/libexec | sort -f | egrep ‘.*d$’ (this print all files in /usr/libexec ending in d ), you’ll find ftpd , hidd , networkd , systemstatsd , and a lot of programs ending in d . The «d» stands for «daemon», which basically means a helper process that always runs in the background. The sec very likely stands for «security». So secd is the «security daemon». Which makes sense because you said it looks like it works with keychain stuff.

What’s the point of daemons? Some daemons stay running to either do some ongoing task. hidd («human interface device daemon»), for example, is the process responsible for handling mouse/keyboard/trackpad input. Some other daemons do some common tasks that many other programs need. Apps can simply tell the daemon to do something instead of having code to do it themselves. So secd probably does something like this, but related to the keychain.

But what exactly? It looks like it doesn’t actually handle normal use of the keychain, since I was still able to use the keychain after I disabled the secd LaunchAgent.

Inspecting the LaunchAgent gives us a clue:

It looks like secd is responsible for syncing the keychain with iCloud?

So what should you do? Try one or more of these:

1. If you don’t need iCloud keychain syncing, turn it off in iCloud preferences.
2. Use launchctl to disable secd if it doesn’t seem to adversely affect anything.
3. If you need iCloud keychain syncing, see if you have a ton of keychain items, and remove the ones you don’t need.
4. Perhaps rebuild your keychain (make a new keychain, move items you need into it, and move it over the older one), in case there are unnecessary artifacts left over in the old keychain.

Что делать с проблемой «accountsd»?

Некоторые пользователи смогли решить проблему, использовав следующую схему:

• в «Системных настройках» выйти из своей учетной записи Apple ID;
• перезапустить свой Mac;
• снова войти в учетную запись.

Однако подобная схема сработала не у всех. Некоторым удалось решить проблему посредством сброса SMC или NVRAM и последующего перезапуска их на своем Mac.

Другие предложили более продвинутое решение устранения неполадок:

• открыть приложение «Библиотека» и перейти в раздел «Accounts»;
• вручную переименовать файл «Accountssqlite» на «Accounts4.sqlite.testbackup»;
• перезагрузить свой Mac.

Однако здесь надо действовать осторожно, чтобы такие манипуляции не повлияли на ваши учетные записи в iCloud или синхронизацию.

Пока Apple не признала наличие проблемы. Остается только ждать, что она будет решена с выпуском обновления программного обеспечения.

Question: Q: «secd» process draining battery after Sierra upgrade

Just upgraded an Airbook to Sierra and boy am I regretting it right now. This secd process is pegging my CPU at 90+ percent, along with CloudKeyChainSynchingproxy, and CloudKeychainProxy to a lesser degree but from a little initial research, they are all related.

I bypassed everything relating to iCloud when installing this as I am not an iphone user, rarely use itunes and generally have no use for icloud.

No matter how many times I stop these processes in the Activity monitor, it starts back up again almost immediately or after 10 minutes or so. The result? Battery drain after less than two hours when my battery charge use to last the entire day.

I have this same issue after upgrading to Sierra; however, the box for Keychain in the iCloud prefs was not checked. Does anyone have another possible answer for this? I do not have CloudKeyChainSynchingproxy or CloudKeychainProxy using much CPU but I do have IDSKeychainSynchingProxy showing up as the #2 item for %CPU use. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Keychain unchecked in System preference — sec process still taking 70 to 102% of CPU since OS Sierra update.

I’ve spent about an hour trying to fix this and your advice worked. My wife doesn’t use iCould Keychain on her 2013 iMac so I never checked that box. Doing what you suggested ended secd, which was using 70% of the CPU and absolutely killing the performance. Pretty serious bug but based on the lack of info out there it does not seem to be widespread.

For those of you who already had the Keychain box unchecked (like me) but still having the secd process running excessively, I checked the box and went through the full sign-in process, then restarted. Everything seems fine now. Hope this helps.

After upgrading my MacBook Pro to Sierra, secd was running at 95-100% with Keychain turned off.

Once I turned it on, secd instantly dropped to 0.1 — 0.5% and I could feel my machine breathe a sigh of relief (actually it stopped «breathing» 🙂

Yes this worked! «secd» is now at 0,0 on my process monitor.

I had never user iCloud so I needed to open it once using my brand new Apple ID (just registered after 3 years on mavericks for sierra update) and then followed your steps. Thanks!!

Had the same problem but was able to fix using a variation of the previous answer. My Keychain was already unchecked, so I did the following steps:

1) Checked the Keychain box

2) Entered password to make changes but DID NOT hit Enter

3) Clicked on Cancel instead so that changes were not made

Believe it or not, the CPU activity for the secd dropped like a rock immediately.

Was having similar problem — suddenly MacBook air 11″ battery started draining really, really fast, got very hot, and fan ran madly. Took to Genius Bar — nothing other than said battery checked out okay. Today, checked Activity Monitor and my workplace techie noticed «secd» was using over 80%. We googled and found this page. My Keychain was NOT checked, but I did what some of you said — checked it, went through the set-up, and suddenly the «secd» bombed down to 0.0. Now, I hope that will address the battery drain! Will watch for a few days to see how this all goes. Apple you really need to be sending out some notices to us about these things.

Hello! I stumbled on your question because i was having the same problem with my macbook pro 2011, that I had just recently upgraded to Sierra OS. I noticed the fan would be running all the time, and the battery was just being drained too quickly. I was able to fix it by going to «activity monitor» and selecting the «energy» tab. There i found that a process called secd was running at 65% all the time. Btw, Secd is a security daemon you can google that if your interested it. but mainly, you double-click on the item line where it says secd and you can forcequit the process and voila my fan immediately stopped running and the mac stopped being overheated.

KChain was unchecked on my Mac . but after I signed out of ICloud (keep copies of files on your Mac), secd disappeared! (Now I can hear my thoughts not the fan. ha ha . )
