Run program minimized windows

Launching Windows APP minimized on the system’s startup.

Currently I have had installed Facebook Messenger and here is the problem: the app has to be launched to show nortifications on a new unread message, and it has no functionality make it run on startup of the latest Windows 10.

I tried to add the app to the Startup folder to launch it every time the system startup.

I was successful, however, I was unsuccessful making it start minimized.
I tried to make a link (.lnk) to the app, and set it’s Run option to Minimized, just to see that it does not work.
The app launches perfectly however.

So my question is: How can I make Facebook Messenger app startup minimized at the startup of the Windows system?

Try creating a batch file and dropping that into the Startup folder . . .

Right click and choose New — Text file

Paste the following text into the text file and replace the path to the Messenger App

start /min «» «C:\Windows\notepad.exe»

Then save that file and change the file extension from txt to bat

I have already tried that. It does open the app, but it seems that /min switch is being applied to explorer.exe, and I’m not aware of any other way of launching an app directly without explorer.exe

The way I used, but it open APP in standard way, not the minimized one:
start /min «» explorer.exe shell:appsFolder\Facebook.317180B0BB486_8xx8rvfyw5nnt!App
The source how I come up with using explorer.exe

Edit, found a way to start without explorer:
start /min «» calculator:
(also do not start the app minimized, so still in a search of a solution)

1. Did you make any changes on the computer prior to the issue?
2. Is the issue confined to games?
3. What is the make and model of the computer?
4. Did you try to update the display drivers from the manufacturer website?
5. Do you receive any error message on the computer?

Check if this helps.

Hi — I have an update on this issue. I didn’t make changes to the computer prior to the issue that I know of. The issue seems to be just with a small number of games (not regular programs). The computer is an HP Pavilion computer. I did go to the NVidia’s website to get the latest graphics drivers but it downloaded a driver checker and didn’t give me access to the specific driver that I was looking for (NVidia GeForce 9100). The checker ran and found drivers that were out of date but the only NVidia entry it found was nForce PCI System Management rather than the GeForce. I haven’t received any errors.

I also had previously tried to run the program maximized and that didn’t help.

I lowered the screen resolution but that didn’t help.

There weren’t any options to change hardware acceleration.

All in all, I still have the issue and don’t know what to try next. Any ideas? Thanks.

THIS link — goes to the driver selection page, where you can choose which Nvidia driver
you wish to download and install. Stick with WHQL unless you want to BETA test for Nvidia.

However, OEM mfg’s such as HP and DELL often supply their own drivers. If they supply drivers
for your machine/gpu they may be the better option to

Why the games would suddenly stop running in wide screen with no changes is a mystery,
but if you go to the Nvidia Control Panel \ Adjust Desktop Size and Position and click on the
‘scaling’ tab you can choose the option to run everything on ‘ Full Screen ‘ or should you find
the picture is better with a particular game @ 4:3 you can choose ‘ Aspect Ratio ‘.
Aspect Ratio will automatically adjust the aspect ratio according to the resolution selected in the game.
You also need to set ‘Perform Scaling on’ to GPU.

To add to what Sanmartin said, most older games that use a 4:3 aspect ratio will look better if not stretched to fit wide screen. Games made for 4:3 that don’t stretch will have the top and bottom of the image chopped off to fit the width without stretching, which also has the effect of foreshortening the field of view.
It’s up to you obviously, but I prefer to run the older games in 4:3 (1280X1024 or similar)
or with a slight stretch by using 1600X 1024 or 1080, or occasionally 1680 x 1050. These three
options have only a small black bar at the sides.

Some games also have ‘fixes’ for wide screen. One example is Need for Speed Most Wanted,
which has (or had) a fix with a custom launcher which allows you to choose a custom resolution.
The site below has many fixes. These are mostly adjustments to the field of view, and will
always result in some foreshortening of the FOV. Still better than stretching sideways though.

How to automatically start a program minimized in Windows

Some Windows programs are more convenient to have running in the background and out of the way. We’ll show you how to avoid needing to manually minimize a program every time you run it.

Some Windows programs are better run in the background and out of the way. To avoid having to manually minimize a program every time you run it, you can configure the program’s shortcut so it will automatically run minimized. Here’s how:

In our example, we’re going to configure TechSmith’s Snagit software to automatically start up in a minimized window. Snagit is a screen-capture program that doesn’t need to be run in the foreground. Snagit doesn’t have a setting to allow it to start it up minimized, so we’ll configure Windows 7 to do it for us.

Step 1: Right-click on the shortcut of the program you want to start minimized and select Properties.

Step 2: Click on the drop-down menu under Run.

Step 3: Select «Minimized,» then click the OK button.

The next time you start the program, it’ll start up minimized and out of the way. If the program has been written to minimize to the notification area in the system tray it’ll show up there; otherwise, it’ll minimize to your taskbar.

C# Run application MINIMIZED at windows startup

I got the following code to run the application at windows startup:

It works. but I want the program to start minimized (at windows startup only). I didnt find a working code / good explanation how to do it. Can you help me please?

If you want to start minimized at windows startup only you can add extra argument to command line, like myapp.exe —start-minimized , then you can parse this parameter and detect whether you need to start minimized or not.

Since this is only adding a registry key to SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run which causes the OS to start the app at startup there isn’t a lot you can do unless the application you want to startup accepts a command line parameter to start minimized (You could then add the parameter to the executable path of the key).

If this is a necessary function and you can’t modify the program to accept a parameter to minimize the only thing I can think of doing would be to write a program that would minimize these apps after the OS has started them.

Had a really hard time finding a good answer to this, finally found it in a really old book. On my Forms application, just opened the program.cs and changed

and it opens without a flicker directly to the tray. This app was more just a service, so set it to just have a notify icon and exit button when right clicked. Hope this helps!!

How to start Windows program minimized

Some Windows programs don’t need to open their program windows at all on launch. This is for instance the case when they run in the background or if you don’t use the interface at all to interact with them or need to access information they display in it.

A prime example is the screenshot taking tool SnagIt which I run minimized on start as I control its functionality solely through keyboard shortcuts.

You may run other programs regularly that you don’t need to interact with directly on start, for instance an email client, a backup program that runs automated tasks or a file transfer client.

The following tip works in all recent and not-so recent versions of the Windows operating system.

Veteran Windows users know all about it probably but if you are new or have never looked it up, it may be useful to you as you can control how programs start on your system.

Good news is that you don’t need to download and run third-party software for it as the functionality is baked in.

Control program window states in Windows on start

Here is what you need to do:

  1. First thing you need to know is that the following works with shortcuts only. This means that it works on all program shortcuts in the Start Menu, Windows Taskbar and desktop. You can right-click on any executable file in Windows to create a new shortcut for it.
  2. Right-click the shortcut, for instance on the Windows Taskbar, and select properties from the context menu that opens up. Depending on the version of Windows that you are using, you may right-click again on the program name instead before properties appears in the context menu.
  3. The Shortcut tab of the program’s properties window highlights the window state under run. A click on the menu there enables you to set it to «normal window», «minimized» or «maximized».
  4. Select minimized from the selection and click on ok afterwards.

I suggest you test the change right away to make sure that it is indeed running in minimized state when you execute it.

You may revert the change at any time by following the instructions again and changing the state of the run preference to «normal window» which is the default window state.

Tip : If you need more control over a program, you may want to check out the excellent AdvancedRun by Nirsoft. It allows you to change the window state on launch but also window position and size among many, many other things.
