Please try use this solution:

«I have tried this solution to create the folder C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\URTInstallPath_GAC\ and it appears to have worked so far.»

I believe that is the solution to your issue.

Or please use the event viewer to detect this issue.

Open the event viewer first, open one Microsoft office program second.

Check if any error or warning message shows in the event viewer under Windows Logs -> Application.

You can paste the information here.

Glad to receive your feedback.

I will re-install when i have a faster internet connection as the download is too slow.

The event viewer did not show anything changing when message appeared.

Then can your VS work fine? Anyway, please upload the installation log.

U se a tool named collect.exe to collect the log file. Download collect.exe and run it directly. The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the VS and .NET logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab. Please upload the vslogs.cab file on onedrive .

I will help check if any install error exists.

Question

Installed VS2008. Then

Start Visual Basic 6. I kept getting this message «Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 . «, have to cancel the dialog 3 times.

I then took out VB.NET (only left C#) but the problem still exist.

Note: I installed VS2008 from an external (USB) hard drive. If the hard drive is connected, I don’t get this message.

Where is the install path of VS2008?
Do you mean launching Visual Basic 6 (rather than Visual Studio Basic 2008) causes the message?

thanks. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help. http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/vssetup/thread/60424309-bd78-4ca2-b618-03c4a16123b6

VS2008 is installed on C:\Program Files . (The default location). And

Yes, it happens when launching VB6.

Note: It does not happen when I have the installation DVD in the drive (actually, I copy the installation DVD on to an external USB drive because my DVD player is broken).
Note2: My co-worker is having the same problem for long long time. It also happens when he launches MS Outlook.

I would suggest you to insert the VB6 installation media and repair in the maintenance mode, which can probably fix the problem, and for your coworker’s problem, try to repair Office.

I think the problem is at VB6 or Office side, the setup package of VB6/Office can be missing/corrupted, it redirects to Visual Studio 2008 config.

I’ve seen several similar cases’ solution is to repair/reinstall VB6/Office.(Office 2007 users can also use Office Diagnostics: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA012340761033.aspx)
We can also get into event logs of the Application to look for more clues.(type eventvwr in the command prompt to open event viewer)

Just re-installed VB6+SP6 (in case I remembered wrong). Does not work still.

Looked in the event log, found two warnings:

Detection of product ‘‘, feature ‘Visual_Studio.NET_Pro_x86_enu’, component ‘<2657a01d-05bd-49aa-b4ae-b243be77cd6c>‘ failed. The resource ‘E:\’ does not exist.

Detection of product ‘‘, feature ‘VCsh_for_VS_7_Pro_810_x86_enu’ failed during request for component ‘

I searched keys in the log and found couple of your response to other post. But still no clue on how to fix it.

Note: Again, the E: drive is an External USB drive where the installation CD (VB6) and DVD (VS2008 MSDN Sub) was copied to. I installed from E: because my DVD drive was broken. Also, as I mentioned in previous post, I have no problem when the E drive is connected.

Express: 1) Reboot , 2) disable anti-virus , 3) launch as admin and check. Then, if need be: 4) verbose log , 5) event logs . 6) Try on a virtual if you still can’t get it working? Or secondary computer? Also 7) google exact error messages and check user comments. 8) Run general Visual Studio update?

Malware?: Run a full check for malware too? It is all over the place these days.

Locks?: A quick search seems to indicate a permission or patching issue of some sort.

  • You can try to run the tool with elevated rights ?
  • You could have disk corruption — disk errors ? Faulty ACL permissions ? (possible)
  • It also just might be that your anti-virus suite has locked some file that MSI is trying to put back in place. You can try to disable it temporarily to see. Note that the file can have been quarantined as well (moved somewhere else).

Tip: Maybe check section: «A Deployment Mnemonic» here (down the page, yellow section).

Additionally: Please try the few hints here first. In essence: Reboot , get a verbose log file created, check event logs and try to log in as another user (generally only effective for user profile corruption issues, but can help):

Create verbose MSI log:

Stefan Kruger’s site: http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/msifaq/a/1022.htm — you can enable the logging policy for all MSI operations to log all MSI operations. Section: «Globally for all setups on a machine«.

Logging interpretation tips here. How to make sense of the MSI log files.

“Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Visual Studio 2008”

I get the message «Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. » whenever I build the install project for my application. It configures VS for a while, then builds the project. This does not happen when I build the vb.net application itself, only the installation project in the same solution. This occurs on applications using the Leadtools library, but not others.

Any ideas on what could cause this?

Uninstall and reinstall Visual Studio and the problem will go away.

Taken from this website (because I am afraid that it might go away):

VB6 startup annoyance: ‘Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Visual Studio 2010’ If you are still maintaining old VB6 code and have newer versions of Visual Studio installed, you may be dealing with this annoyance every time you launch your IDE:

What is happening is there is an installed VS.NET component referenced in your system registry which itself references xml configuration files which may or may not exist on your system — even if the installation of that component has been successful. When one of these xml files is not found, Windows Installer kicks in and tries to «fix» things. Uh thanks MS. Of course VB6 itself does not care about any of these xml files.

Fortunately, creating zero byte files with the paths and names it is expecting should make the problem go away. To find the names of the missing files, open your Event Viewer (just type «Event Viewer» in the Windows search bar or go to Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools > Event Viewer) and navigate to Windows Logs > Application. You should see a pair of yellow triangle «Warning» icons attributed to Windows Installer near the top of the list — the missing file will be shown in the first (lower) of the two events.

Create that missing file and run VB6 again. Refresh the Event Viewer and look for the next missing file, create it, etc. until the error no longer appears.

Note that due to folder security settings, it is probably easiest to create each file in a location which you have full access to (e.g. your Desktop) and then copy the new file into the destination folder.

The missing file names themselves may vary, but this is what I had to create to solve the error with VS 2010:
