How to Play Windows-only Games on Linux with Steam Play

The new experimental feature of Steam allows you to play Windows-only games on Linux. Here’s how to use this feature in Steam right now.

What is Steam Play?

Game distribution platform Steam has implemented a fork of WINE, it’s called – “Steam Play”. With Steam Play, Linux users can play games that are available on Windows only. It was in beta phase for a while but you can now directly try it out without opting in for Steam beta updates.

Play Windows-only games in Linux with Steam Play

You need to install Steam first. Steam is available for all major Linux distributions. I have written in detail about installing Steam on Ubuntu and you may refer to that article if you don’t have Steam installed yet.

Once you have Steam installed and you have logged into your Steam account, it’s time to see how to enable Windows games in Steam Linux client.

Step 1: Go to Account Settings

Run Steam client. On the top left, click on Steam and then on Settings.

Step 3: Enable Steam Play beta

Now, you’ll see an option Steam Play in the left side panel. Click on it and check the boxes:

• Enable Steam Play for supported titles (You can play the whitelisted Windows-only games)
• Enable Steam Play for all titles (You can tryto play all Windows-only games)

You can also opt to change the version of the compatibility layer (Proton) if you need it. Once, you are done selecting the options, hit “OK” and proceed to restart steam in order for the changes to take effect.

Here’s how it will work:

For example, I have Age of Empires in my Steam library which is not available on Linux normally. But after I enabled Steam Play beta for all Windows titles, it now gives me the option for installing Age of Empires on Linux.

Things to know about Steam Play feature

There are a few things you should know and keep in mind about using Windows-only games on Linux with Steam Play:

• Only 27 Windows-games were whitelisted for Steam Play initially. These whitelisted games work seamlessly on Linux. However, now the number of games supported has increased significantly.
• You can try any Windows game with Steam Play beta but it might not work all the time. Some games will crash sometimes while some games might not run at all.
• You won’t see the Windows-only games available for Linux in the Steam store. You’ll have to either try the game on your own or refer to this community maintained list or a better-looking web version of the same to see the compatibility status of the said Windows game. You can also contribute to the list by filling this form.
• If you have games downloaded on Windows via Steam, you can save some download data by sharing Steam game files between Linux and Windows.

How Do You Identify Games That Work On Steam Play?

I’m sure that you don’t have a lot of free time to download games one by one and test it with Steam Play.

In that case, you can visit ProtonDB to check reports/stats contributed by gamers who test the games.

You can use that as a reference to decide whether you should download/purchase a certain game.

Если вы покупаете в Steam игру, которая может работать в разных операционных системах, то после покупки вы можете использовать ее в любой системе. Не нужно покупать игры для каждой системы отдельно.

Установка Steam в Ubuntu Linux

Рассмотрим, как установить Steam в Ubuntu Linux (Linux Mint и других дистрибутивах, основанных на Ubuntu).

Есть разные способы установки Steam в Ubuntu Linux. Я использовал один из популярных способов: сначала из репозиториев дистрибутива устанавливается инсталлятор (пакет steam-installer), а затем данный инсталлятор устанавливает клиент Steam.

Мы будем использовать терминал. Чтобы открыть терминал в Ubuntu Linux можно нажать сочетание клавиш Ctrl+Atl+T или запустить его через главное меню ( Приложения→Стандартные→Терминал ) .

Первое, что мы должны сделать, это подключить репозиторий multiverse, в котором находятся проприетарные программы. Выполняем команды:

Установим инсталлятор — пакет steam-installer. Для этого выполняем команду:

Когда инсталлятор установится, мы должны его запустить, чтобы он установил клиент Steam. Через главное меню системы найдите приложение Steam (размещается в разделе Игры ) и запустите его.

Откроется небольшое окошко, в котором будет отображаться процесс установки.

Когда установка завершится, окошко закроется. У меня оно просто закрылось, без каких-либо сообщений.

Запуск клиента Steam в Linux

Теперь можно запустить сам клиент Steam. Открываем главное меню системы (лаунчер) и запускаем Steam (размещается в разделе Игры ).

Появится окно с предложением войти в существующий Steam-аккаунт или создать новый аккаунт. Создаем аккаунт, или используем логин и пароль, если вы уже зарегистрированы.

Если все прошло успешно, то откроется клиент Steam. Через него вы можете искать, покупать, устанавливать и удалять игры. Игры сопровождаются скриншотами, видео, описанием и другими полезными материалами.

Также клиент Steam можно запустить из командной строки, выполнив в терминале команду:

Этот способ нужно использовать если вдруг у вас клиент не запускается. В терминале будет выведена в таком случае ошибка.

Установка игр для Linux

Магазин игр внутри клиента Steam на самом является сайтом store.steampowered.com, поэтому его интерфейс может со временем меняться.

Чтобы найти какую-либо игру, нужно перейти в раздел STORE (Магазин). Затем можно открыть меню Игры и выбрать соответсвующий раздел, например, игры по жанру.

В магазине игр представлены игры для всех операционных систем. Каждая игра имеет пиктограммы, которые показывают в каких системах она может работать. Пиктограмма со значком логотипа Steam означает, что игра работает в Linux. Такой значок (а не пингвин, например) используется потому, что существует специальный дистрибутив Linux — Steam OS, который имеет такой логотип.

Для поиска игр можно воспользоваться строкой поиска в правом верхнем углу страницы. Можно вписать туда слово linux и нажать Enter . Так будут найдены игры, в которых есть упоминание слова Linux.

Чтобы показать только игры, которые имеют версию для Linux, нужно в правой колонке, где представлены фильтры, установить галочку SteamOS + Linux (блок Narrow by OS — Выборка по ОС).

Выбрав игру, ее можно установить, нажав кнопку Play Game .

Игры скачиваются в фоновом режиме. Вы можете продолжать просматривать магазин. Статус загрузки отображается в нижней части окна программы.

Если игра платная, то для покупки нажимаем кнопку Add to Cart (Положить в корзину).

И он, похоже, не «дружит» с текущей версией Steam. Вернув предыдущую версию драйвера Nvidia, инсталлятор Steam заработал.

Steam Play Compatibility Tools are great for running games that do not work natively on your system. Of course there is no guarantee games will work, But it certainly boosts the list of playable games on Steam for Linux. You can run Windows games or DOS games on Linux, You can even run Linux games that fail to run when you start them normally.

In this guide I will explain what each Tool is for, how to install them and how you use them.

First up we need to enable Steam Play in the Steam settings,

Next click on the Steam Play menu and enable the first setting.

You can optionally enable the second box to enable Steam Play automatically for all games in your library, I would not recommend this because It breaks the Linux filtering tool.

Now Save and Steam will restart, To actually use it now we need to force it for each game we want to play, So right click the game you want and then click on properties.

Here go to the bottom, check the Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and then select the tool you want to use for the specific game.

Below I will list all Steam Play Compatibility tools out there, describe what they do and how to install them.

This is Valves own fork of Wine, It will be installed automatically if you select it as the tool of choice in any games properties. Proton should be the go to tool if you want to play Windows games.

ProtonDB [www.protondb.com] is a Proton DataBase, Here anyone can report how well games run for them with Proton, It creates some nice stats and it is a useful place to check which games you will be able to play.

I would also urge everyone to report the games you have played, It helps a lot. Good or bad, even if there are already hundreds of reports. Also check out this Curator who lists Platinum rated games.

The Proton Github [github.com] is where you can report problems with games, It probably won’t get fixed because of it, but it is good to let everyone know there is interest, and who knows maybe the community finds a fix together.

Winetricks is a tool that helps you set certain tweaks to Wine to help make programs run or run better. Protontricks is just a simple wrapper which deals with proton directories in a manageable way.

Proton GE is a fork of proton by Glorious Eggroll, That’s where the GE comes from. It fixes a lot of game specific bugs, so if your game does not work with Proton, You can always try this one.

Steam Linux Runtime is a container for your native Linux games, it will use more of Steams own libraries instead of the ones from your system. If a game does not run normally you could try this one.

Steam Linux Runtime has a few advantages for users; Games can not access your home directory, they are isolated in their own little container. It can help support older games that don’t work on newer systems. For developers it creates a single runtime they have to test against.

You should be all set up and ready to play anything without the need for Proprietary Operating Systems.
