Pencil is available in two different types of packaging: standalone application and Firefox extension.

Standalone version for your own operating system

Different builds of Pencils are made for popular operating systems. Please select the build on the right side and start installing Pencil.

Firefox Extension

Pencil is built on top of Mozilla technologies and can be installed into your Firefox as an extension.

NOTE: the Firefox extension bases on an older version of Pencil which is no longer in active development.

Nightly builds are the bleeding edge versions of Pencil2D, which contains the most recent fixes and features. The following links will direct you to Google Drive, please right-click on a file and select Download . The filename is pencil2d-OS-year-month-date .

Troubleshooting

Qt5Widgets.dll was not found

1. Right click on the file you just downloaded and select Extract all .
2. Go to the location you just extract to, find Pencil2D.exe and double click on it.

msvcp140.dll is missing

Double click and install vcredist_x64.exe or vcredist_x86.exe inside the Pencil2D folder.

api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing

Download and install the following windows updates:

Pencil 2D can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. (Mac users)

Right click on the file and press Open .

About The Next Version

Pencil V3 is a rewrite of Pencil that aims to fix major performance and scalability issues of the application. The new version is under heavy development and we are expecting GA builds in June. The following list summarizes important changes in the new version:

• Pencil V3 uses Electron instead of Mozilla XULRunner as the runtime. We expect that by moving into this Nodejs-based environment, the Pencil source code can be much easier for all fellow developers to play with. The fact that Mozilla XULRunner is outdated is also a reason for the movement.
• A new, zip-based file format was introduced to support large documents and better embedding of external bitmaps/resources.
• A new mechanism for page management that dramatically reduces memory usage for large documents.
• Document pages can now be structured into a tree-like model.
• Custom fonts can now be embedded into Pencil .epz documents
• Printing and PDF export will be improved to support all platforms and with many options
• New UI approach

Pencil uses Atom Electron as the runtime, follow the these steps to setup the environment:

Create animated digital comics

I’ve always been fascinated with animation and these days there are loads of professional software tools around that allow you to become a cartoonist yourself.

Pencil tool is a little different from the likes of Flash or Director in two ways: a) it is based around traditional hand-drawn animation techniques, and b) it’s free.At the center of the application is a timeline, which allows you to add four types of layers: bitmap image, vector image, sound, and camera. The animation basically works by setting keyframes one each layer and arranging the different layers on top of each other.

You start by sketching out your characters in bitmap format using the pencil tool, before adding a vector layer and inking it out with the pen tool and fill tool.The principle is very simple and the interface is much clearer than that of Flash or a similar high-end animation tool. What I liked about Pencil is that all the tools and options are on display from the start and nothing is hidden, plus you can detach or remove palettes to make things easier on yourself.

The problem with Pencil is that it’s very difficult to produce good quality drawings unless you have a graphics tablet — most mouses simply aren’t conducive to precise sketching.What’s more, there aren’t any predefined shapes, objects or templates included that might help you get started. So, while this might be a good way to learn the basic principles of cartoon animation, it’s difficult to create anything truly impressive unless you’ve lots of patience.

Pencil is an animation/drawing software that lets you create traditional hand-drawn animation (cartoon) using both bitmap and vector graphics.

Pencil is free and open source. Pencil is not intended to mimick web-oriented vector-based animation software such as Flash. Its main purpose is to make traditional animation.

Neither does it try to rival commercial software targetting the professional animation sector. Pencil is intended to be a simple program enabling anyone to make 2D animation.

Лицензия на свободное ПО разрешает загрузить Pencil бесплатно. Приложение не требует установки, после распаковки запускается скачанный файл. Разработана Pencil для Windovs 7, 8, 10, но функционирует и в других средах, это кросс-платформенная программа. Язык приложения – английский.

Рассмотрим достоинства программы.

• Количество настроек минимально, необходимые инструменты расположены в отдельных передвигаемых панелях (в главном окне приложения).
• Запускается поиск изображений по ключу в интернете.
• Добавляется тень к созданному изображению, устанавливается фон, накладываются различные специальные эффекты. Загружаются заготовленные ранее файлы изображений в формате *.PNG.
• Встроены инструменты для рисования, используются функции наложения слоев, настраивается камера.
• Применяется шкала времени, в которой документ проекта редактируется, и где регулируются параметры воспроизведения.
• Встроен набор инструментов для рисования — кисти, карандаши, ручки. Реализованы стандартные операции копирования и вставки.
• Отмечается легкость в использовании и интуитивно понятный интерфейс. Управлять приложением можно с помощью мыши и сочетаниями клавиш на клавиатуре.
• При создании анимации применяется покадровый алгоритм, позволяющий просматривать и регулировать частоту смены изображений, настраивать циклическое воспроизведение.
• Данные экспортируются в разные форматы. Файлы изображений, используемых при создании анимации сохраняются в формате *.GIF, векторная анимация — в *.SVG, флеш — в формате *.SWF и *.AVI.
• В программе поддерживается добавление звука.
