Oracle 12c system requirements linux

Use this checklist to check minimum operating system requirements for Oracle Database.

Table 1-2 Operating System General Checklist for Oracle Database on Linux

Operating system general requirements

OpenSSH installed manually, if you do not have it installed already as part of a default Linux installation.

A Linux kernel in the list of supported kernels and releases listed in this guide.

Linux x86-64 operating system requirements

The following Linux x86-64 kernels are supported:

The following IBM: Linux on System z kernels are supported:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3: 4.18.0-240.el8.s390x or later

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4: 3.10.0-693.el7.s390x or later

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12: 4.4.73-5-default s390x or later

Oracle Database Preinstallation RPM for Oracle Linux

If you use Oracle Linux, then Oracle recommends that you run the Oracle Database Preinstallation RPM for your Linux release to configure your operating system for Oracle Database and Oracle Grid Infrastructure installations.

Oracle RPM Checker utility for IBM: Linux on System z

Oracle recommends that you use the Oracle RPM Checker utility to verify that you have the required Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE packages installed on your IBM: Linux on System z operating system before you start the Oracle Database or Oracle Grid Infrastructure installation.

Disable Transparent HugePages

Oracle recommends that you disable Transparent HugePages and use standard HugePages for enhanced performance.

3 Oracle Database Preinstallation Tasks

This chapter describes the tasks that you must complete before you start Oracle Universal Installer.

This guide contains information required to install Oracle Database 12 c . Ensure that you review information related to the platform on which you intend to install Oracle Database 12 c .

To use Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) or Oracle Restart, you must first install Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server before you install and create the database. Otherwise, you must manually register the database with Oracle Restart. See «Installing Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server for an Existing Database»

To install Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server, see «Requirements for an Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server Installation» and to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a cluster, see Oracle Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-Bit) before you proceed with the database preinstallation tasks.

3.1 Oracle Database Hardware Requirements

This section describes hardware component and hard disk space requirements.

3.1.1 Hardware Component Requirements for Windows x64

The following table lists the hardware components that are required for Oracle Database on Windows x64.

Table 3-1 Windows x64 Minimum Hardware Requirements

3.1.2 Hard Disk Space Requirements

This section lists the minimum system requirements for Windows platforms that use the NT File System (NTFS). Oracle strongly recommends that you install the Oracle database home, Oracle database binaries, and trace files on Oracle ACFS or NTFS; the database files themselves must be placed on Oracle ASM if using Oracle ACFS; otherwise they can be placed on NTFS. Usage of Oracle ACFS and Oracle ASM or NTFS is recommended to ensure security of these files.

The NTFS system requirements listed in this section are more accurate than the hard disk values reported by the Oracle Universal Installer Summary window. The Summary window does not include accurate values for disk space, the space required to create a database, or the size of compressed files that are expanded on the hard drive.

The hard disk requirements for Oracle Database components include 32 MB to install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Oracle Universal Installer on the partition where the operating system is installed. If sufficient space is not detected, installation fails and an error message appears.

Table 3-2 lists the disk space requirements on NTFS for Windows x64. The starter database requires 720 MB of disk space.

The figures in these tables include the starter database.

Database Smart Flash Cache Support

Database Smart Flash Cache is supported only on Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux.

Oracle Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System (Oracle ACFS) and Oracle Automatic Storage Management Dynamic Volume Manager (Oracle ADVM) Support

Although Oracle ADVM supports raw disks in Oracle Automatic Storage Management disk groups, Oracle ADVM device special files created through raw(8) are not supported; Oracle ADVM only supports block device special files.

Oracle ASM Filter Driver Support

Oracle Automatic Storage Management Filter Driver (Oracle ASMFD) is supported only on Linux x86-64.

Share-based Instance Caging is supported only on Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux.

IPv6 Networks Support

The IPv6 based IP addresses to configure the private networks for a cluster is not supported on IBM: Linux on System z. It is currently under testing and the support will be announced after testing is successfully complete.

Linking Applications with Oracle Client Libraries

You must use the dynamic Oracle client libraries to link the client code on Linux. Do not link the static Oracle client libraries.

Preinstallation Requirements for Release 12.2

Refer to the installation guides for the preinstallation requirements.

Installation, Configuration, and Upgrade Issues for Release 12.2

There are no installation, configuration, and upgrade issues at the time of this release.

Other Known Issues for Release 12.2

The following section contains information about issues related to Oracle Database 12 c and associated products:

DBCA Displays Incorrect Memory of the Host Server

When creating a database on Linux Container, Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) incorrectly shows the available memory of the host server instead of the Linux Container on the Specify Configuration Options page. When you choose to allocate the percentage of memory based on the value shown, the database creation may fail in the case where total consumable memory for that Linux Container is less than the allocated memory.

You must allocate physical memory for the database according to the configuration of the Linux Container system.

This issue is tracked with Oracle bug 21546793.

Oracle R Enterprise Fails Due to Libtiff Library Version Mismatch

The Cairo package in Oracle R Enterprise fails to load on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 when the libtiff.so.3 version is missing.

Create a symlink for libtiff.so.3 from libtiff5.so.5 .

This issue is tracked with Oracle bug 24939744.

Oracle Grid Infrastructure Installer Prerequisite Check May Fail Due to Incorrect RPM Versions

The Oracle Grid Infrastructure installer prerequisite check for 12 c Release 2 (12.2) may fail if you use the e2fsprogs-1.42.8-1.0.2 (x86_64) and e2fsprogs-libs-1.42.8-1.0.2 (x86_64) packages.

Ensure that you meet the following minimum RPM version requirements:

e2fsprogs-1.41.12-14.el6 (x86_64) or later

e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.12-14.el6 (x86_64) or later

Ignore the e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs failure notifications and proceed with the Oracle Grid Infrastructure installation.

This issue is tracked with Oracle bug 25232262.
