# Nvidia GPUs

# Native nVidia GPUs

# Kepler Series (GTX 6xx, 7xx)

# Highest Supported OS: Current/Big Sur(11)

# Initial Supported OS: Mountain Lion(10.8)

Currently the only 100% native Nvidia architecture that works with macOS 11, Big Sur. Users have reported issues with the GTX 650Ti, 660, 660ti but this is caused by a driver issue on Apple’s end by not supporting the GK106 core(or quite poorly as the issue seems to be memory leakage which also affects real Macs). Another issue with this generation is lower end products marketed as first generation Kepler are actually using a Fermi core but have identical counterparts running Kepler cores as well(GF 116 vs GK 107 found in the GT 640). AND PLEASE NOTICE THAT GTX 745, 750 and ti VARIANTS ARE NOT INCLUDED, THEY’RE NOT KEPLER

Also keep in mind that the following systems have a Kepler GPU meaning that support will likely stay until all pre-Skylake hardware is dropped(so anything without USB-C):

# Unsupported nVidia GPUs

# Ampere Series (RTX 30xx)

Unfortunately no support in any version of macOS as no drivers were ever written even for High Sierra. Not much else to add.

These cards include:

# Turing Series (RTX 20xx, GTX 16xx)

# Highest Supported OS:NONE

Unfortunately no support in any version of macOS as no drivers were ever written even for High Sierra. Not much else to add.

These cards include:

  • Titan RTX
  • RTX 2080 Ti
  • RTX 2080 Super
  • RTX 2080

# Volta Series(V)

# Highest Supported OS:NONE

The same idea as Turing, no drivers were ever written

These cards include:

  • Titan V
  • Titan V CEO Edition

# Kepler Series(GK 106 Variants)

GPUs running the GK 106 core have the unfortunate consequence of having a serious issue regarding VRAM leakage. This means that there’s a high chance of distortion and overall instability when running these GPUs which unfortunately have no real solution as even installing web drivers has no affect. A list of GPUs with this core can be found here

Second generation Kepler:

First generation Kepler:

# Fermi rebranded(GF108, GF117 and GF119)

# Highest Supported OS: High Sierra(10.13.6)

# Initial Supported OS: Lion(10.7)

Since nVidia can’t comply to any naming conventions, they decided to make some 600/700 series cards based on the older and incompatible Fermi architecture. These cards include:

  • GT 730 (GF108 variant)
  • GT 720A
  • GT 710 (GF119 variant)
  • GT 705
  • GT 640 (GF108 and GF116)
  • GT 630 (GF108 variant)
  • GT 620
  • GT 610

# Pascal Series (GTX 10xx)

# Highest Supported OS: High Sierra(10.13.6)

# Initial Supported OS: Sierra(10.12.4)

Well pretty sure most users know what going on with Pascal and Maxwell but I’ll just mention it quickly here. No support for these cards in Mojave/Catalina but macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 do support these cards with the combination of Nvidia’s somewhat shotty drivers and Lilu+WhateverGreen

  • GTX Titan X(GP 102-400 Pascal core)
  • GTX Titan Xp(GP 102-450 Pascal core)

  • NvidiaWeb property: Forces nvda_drv=1 on each boot, required for systems with non-native NVRAM(EmuVariableUEFI)

# Maxwell Series (GTX 9xx, 745, 750/ti)

# Highest Supported OS: High Sierra(10.13.6)

# Initial Supported OS: Yosemite(10.10.x)

Same idea as Pascal, though the naming scheme is a bit odd as the GTX 745, 750 and 750ti are all Maxwell based even though they’re being marketed with the Kepler line so be wary when buying

  • GTX Titan X(GM 200 Maxwell core)
  • GTX 980 Ti
  • GTX 980

High Sierra Nvidia WebDriver Loaded on Catalina Beta (No Acceleration)

rayrayronald

I have to say I am a complete noob so this is more likely a fluke.
I will try to include as many details as possible so the community can replicate.
I suspected this method would work on Mojave as well (not yet tried)

So I was installing mackintosh the first time today, started with High Sierra and the NVIDIA Drivers, huge success.

I wanna get Catalina since the apple apps aren’t backward compatible (e.g. notes, reminders), but I read about the lack of Catalina GTX 1080 support and I decided to use the iGPU until the driver comes.

I first edited the .config file, then set the MOBO to IGFX (with multiple monitor support). iGPU worked but there were glitches here and there so I did some finetuning.

Meanwhile I came across this post (problem 5) and changed it to my Mojave build number anyway.

The GTX1080 was still attached to the MOBO and I thought what if I connect one of the monitors to it? (I have two) AND IT WORKED.
System Report shows 2 GPU simultaneously (iGPU and dGPU). For some reason using launchpad will log me out, I suspect the cache limi on the iGPU so I plugged both monitors to the GTX1080 and it works perfectly (system preferences shows 3 monitors connected, which was weird)

I rebooted the device (both monitors on GTX) and as expected, it did not work, since MOBO was set to IGFX. Rebooting into BIOS and changing setting solved the problem.

Setup:
6700K
Asus Maximus Ranger VIII
GTX1080

macOS 10.15 Catalina on Unsupported Macs

0403979

Cancelled

How to update Catalina

Updating Catalina has become quite a ride since Apple stopped delivering full installers in summer 2020. Without additional tools the software update process is broken, too. So there is no direct way to apply security updates.

You need to use tools provided by @jackluke from GitHub or this post and to follow this documentation.

Apple offers official updates and during development and test phase so called beta versions. You can switch between the normal seed and the developer seed offering beta versions of updates using this Apple tool .

Fair warning: Please do not jump onto each available beta version unless you have a stable fall back to boot from. All this is entirely unsupported.

Machine Support

Video Card Support

Pre-Metal AMD video cards (Radeon HD 6xxx series and older without acceleration, Radeon HD 4xxx series and older with acceleration.)
Pre-Metal Nvidia video cards (GeForce 5xx series and older without acceleration, GeForce 3xx Series and older with acceleration i.e. 8600M(GT)/8800M(GT), 9400M/9600M(GT), 320M/330M)
Pre-Metal Intel video cards (Intel HD Graphics 3000 and Intel HD Graphics Arrandale)

Installation

macOS Catalina Patcher

To install on your machine, you can download and run @dosdude1’s macOS Catalina Patcher application, which will let you download a copy of the latest installer app from Apple and create a bootable installer drive for use on unsupported Macs. It contains all the patches necessary to achieve the hardware support listed above. The installation guide can be found here and an installation guide video here.

MacOS patcher (discontinued)

More advanced users may consider using macOS Patcher, which is a command line-based tool that provides the same hardware support, while also adding support for MacBook4,1 systems. Please note that this project is no longer supported by the developer.

APFS ROM Patcher

Warning: This tool could irreversibly brick your EFI chip. Please exercise caution with machines that have multiple EEPROM definitions. Relevant information can be found here and here. The APFS ROM patcher can be found here. Use the password apfs to decrypt the ZIP.
