For anyone out there wanting to play this and is using Linux (or SteamOS) you can get it up and running right now. I managed to play 4 hours of the game with no issues using a Nvidia GTX 650ti gpu.

If you use PlayOnLinux;
1. create a new wineprefix using the 64bit version of Wine 1.9.16-staging.
2. install the windows steam client
3. install No Man’s Sky
4. exit steam
5. launch the shortcut from PlayOnLinux.

It’s as easy as that.

With this gpu, i only ended up disabling vsync out of the default graphics options. It performs pretty well. Most of the defaults are on medium setting, and i do get small lags at times, but it’s highly playable.

Didn’t have to tweak any other wine settings, sound, controls, etc — all seems to work fine.

You can also try launching the game from wine with __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 as prefix from terminal.

Overall this game works very well on Wine, native performance compared to Windows.

Can you get your controller to work? I have a regular xbox 360 wireless controller, works in every other wine game except no man’s sky. Using regular xpad module and I can use the controller in every other game but NMS. Not sure if im the only one having this issue or not.

did you disable gsync too

hey guys, has anyone had any problems with NMS connecting to onlines services. i have NMS working great under wine/Playonlinux, but 2 things i can’t seem to get working correctly.
1. Steam overlay to be able to take screenshots
2. NMS will not connect to online services, so i can’t upload any discoveries.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hamo, you can fix that one by right clicking on steam in the playonlinux window, choose configure wine, then choose the windows version as windows xp.
the steamwebhelper has issue when your trying to emulate windows 7 or above.

I haven’t tried to save it yet, as i didn’t want ot mess up my saves

HI Unixfreak — I tried it just the way you describe but it doesn’t work — Steam will not allow me to install it. I am using the most recent version of Mint. When I start the Windows version of steam with PlayOnLinux, it launches Steam fine. I can install and play other windows games. But in my Steam games list, where it usually says «not installed» or Ready to play», next to No Man’s Sky it says «Not Available.» When I try to install, a Steam dialog pops up saying «this game is not available on your current platform». And that’s as far as I can get. I have no idea why other Windows games will install, bit not this one. Any ideas? I really want to play it on Linux so I don’t have to keep booting into Windows. Thanks!

There latest Game from Joe Danger has Linux support, so i think its possible, even that i guess it will depend on how much work it will take to make it for more then only Windows and Sony

So i guess that even if it will not come with one on launch it will get one later on down the line

Well i do think that depends on how they made the engine. after all they may have made it with Linux, Mac and Windows in head.. so it may even be on resale, or take much less time

It would be cool if No Man’s Sky was released for Linux. And considering that Playstation 4 is POSIX friendly with PS4’s OS being fork of FreeBSD there’s a chance that porting the game to Linux wouldn’t cause much trouble. In fact it probably is more trouble to port it to Windows. Since we can say with a fair certainty that it’s coming to Windows, seeing a Linux port wouldn’t be out of question. Ultimately however that depends on if it’s going to be economically viable.

How to play No Man’s Sky on Linux

No Man’s Sky is an expansive survival game set in a massive universe, filled with different planets and star systems to explore. The object of the game is to explore the vast universe in your spaceship, colonize various planets you discover, and build things.

The game never had a Linux release, and the developers haven’t ever talked about Linux support. However, because of evolving technology in Steam and Wine, it is now possible to play No Man’s Sky on Linux. Here’s how to get it running.

Method 1 – SteamPlay and Proton

If you have a Steam account, the easiest way to play No Man’s Sky on Linux, is with SteamPlay and Proton. According to the ProtonDB page on the game, there isn’t any serious bugs or issues preventing it from running on Linux with Valve’s incredible Windows runtime technology.

To start the process, you must get a copy of No Man’s Sky from the Steam store if you do not already own the game. It is USD 59.99.

To purchase No Man’s Sky on Steam, launch the client on the Linux desktop. After launching Steam, log into your account, and click the “Store” button. Then, find the search box, type in “No Man’s Sky,” and press the Enter key to show search results. Click on the game, add it to your cart and buy it. Or, if you prefer to purchase through a web browser, click this link here, log into your account on the website.

After you’ve purchased a copy of No Man’s Sky from Steam, open up Steam settings, click on “Steam Play,” and enable it for all titles, to allow No Man’s sky to be installed on Linux.

After creating a new account on the website, find the “Store” button at the top and click it to go to the store area of GOG. Click on the “Search for..” box, and type in “No Man’s Sky.” Click on “No Man’s Sky” in the search results to go to the game’s store page.

On the store page, click on the “Add to cart” button. Then, click on the cart icon and purchase the game. Currently, the GOG release of No Man’s Sky is 50% off, at USD 29, instead of USD 59.99.

When you’ve purchased the game, go to your games library on GOG and download No Man’s Sky. Be sure to select the “Download Offline Backup Game Installers” option and not GOG Galaxy!

Setup Wine

Now that you’ve purchased No Man’s Sky from GOG, you must install the Wine runtime on your Linux PC so that the game will install. To install Wine, follow this guide here.

Install No Man’s Sky via Wine

Open up your Linux file manager, and click on the “Downloads” folder. Inside of “Downloads” locate the No Man’s Sky EXE installer, and right-click on it with the mouse.

In the right-click menu, select the option “Wine Windows Program Loader” to launch the installer on your Linux desktop.

Once the installer launches, you’ll see a small box that says “Select Setup Language.” Choose your preferred language and click the “OK” button to continue.

Following the language selection box, a welcome screen appears. Read the welcome screen. Then, check the “EULA” box, and click the “Install” button to set up No Man’s Sky on your Linux PC with Wine.

When the installation is complete, you can launch the game by clicking “Launch” in the installer. Or, double-click on the No Man’s Sky shortcut on the Linux desktop.

Troubleshooting
