Microsoft LifeCam Studio worked in 16.04, no longer working in Ubuntu 18.04

This is frustrating as this camera has worked on this exact same desktop with the exact same hardware, leading me to think that there’s a serious driver issue at work.

The camera appears in lsusb when plugged in. Relevant output:

Various video and recording software will initially recognize the camera but spit out many lines of errors, including VLC, cheese, ffmpeg, mpv, and guvcview.

Before moving on, let me mention the things that I have tried already and which do not work:

Setting the quirks in /etc/modprobe.d/uvcvideo.conf according to the instructions in the replies to this question.

The advice in this thread to add my user to the group video

Playing with the UVC_QUIRK_FIX_BANDWIDTH and UVC_QUIRK_RESTRICT_FRAME_RATE settings hasn’t had any effect, following the instructions in the UVC FAQ.

The most important clue I’ve found so far is on the list of supported devices for this camera:

13 Despite being able to work with lower USB bandwidths, this device always requests the maximum possible bandwidth, even for the MJPEG format. Using one of those cameras in conjunction with another USB device (including the camera internal microphone) will likely fail. You can tell the uvcvideo driver to estimate the required bandwidth instead of trusting the camera by setting the FIX_BANDWIDTH quirk. This will only affect uncompressed formats, and even there there’s no guarantee of success. See the FAQ for more information.

15 Some versions of this camera have been reported to randomly time out or stall in response to valid UVC control requests, probably as a result of a race condition bug in the camera firmware. This can sometime lead to the camera failing to be recognized by the kernel. Little can be done to fix the problem.

Given the above, should I forget about getting this camera to work? Or is there an alternative driver or hack-up I haven’t found yet?

Any ideas on why would this would go from working just fine as of 16.04 to «sorry, your camera’s a brick and there’s no solution» in 18.04? That’s one of those roadblocks that really breaks you out of the Linux experience.

Microsoft LifeCam Cinema unter Ubuntu

Für meine bessere Hälfte war ich auf der Suche nach einer Webcam, es soll nun nicht nur nach Südamerika gechattet, sondern auch videotelefoniert werden. Die Anforderung war wieder ein gutes Bild, ordentlicher Ton, Autofokus und Funktionialität Out-of-the-Box unter Linux. Die Wahl fiel diesmal auf eine Microsoft LifeCam Cinema (Amazon, Ebay) , die laut den Berichten auf Amazon sofort und ohne Frickelei unter Linux läuft.

Der Preis ist ist nicht gerade niedrig, doch man bekommt zum Einen eine wirklich ordentliche Webcam, zum Anderen lässt er sich dank der 19-Prozent-Mehrwertsteuer-Zurück-Aktion (läuft noch bis 31. Januar 2010) auf alle Microsoft Hardware-Produkte um rund 11 Euro drücken. Die Installation der Webcam unter Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 ist simple. Webcam auspacken, anschließen und loslegen… Schaut man sich die Logs an, so sieht man dass die Webcam den UVC-Treiber verwendet…

Der Treiber ist schon eine Weile direkt im Kernel. Von daher sollte die Webcam eigentlich mit allen aktuellen Linux-Distributionen funktionieren. Hier lief sie mit Ubuntu Jaunty und Karmic problemlos. Sowohl mit Cheese als auch mit Skype kann man ohne Frickelei arbeiten. Wer die Webcam bis ins kleinste Konfigurieren möchte, der kann sich GTK+ UVC Viewer aus der Paketverwaltung installieren….

Ihr findet das Programm nach der Installation unter „Anwendungen -> Unterhaltungsmedien -> guvcview“. Mit der Anwendung kann man so gut wie alles steuern was der UVC-Treiber an der Webcam ansteuern kann. Auflösung, Helligkeit, Kontrast und Co, Weißabgleich, Autofokus und Vieles mehr…

Der GTK+ UVC Viewer

Bei mir hatte ich Anfangs Schwierigkeiten mit Cheese und der LifeCam Cinema Videos aufzunehmen. Erst hatte ich auf die Webcam geschimpft, doch das Problem lag an Cheese. Man muss wieder einmal aufpassen, welches Audio-Gerät zur Aufnahme herangezogen wird. Dies macht man am besten wieder mit dem PulseAudio-Lautstärkeregler, den man über…

…nachinstallieren kann. Startet das Programm über “Anwendungen -> Unterhaltungsmedien -> PulseAudio-Lautstärkeregler” und nehmt ein Video in Cheese auf. Sobald die Aufnahme startet, sollte „Cheese“ in der Lasche „Aufnahme“ auftauchen, dort könnt Ihr dann die Webcam als Audio-Eingabegerät auswählen.
