A Windows product key is a 25-character code used to activate Windows. It looks like this:

PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Depending on how you got your copy of Windows 10, you’ll need either a 25-character product key or a digital license to activate it. A digital license (called a digital entitlement in Windows 10, Version 1511) is a method of activation in Windows 10 that doesn’t require you to enter a product key. Without one of these, you won’t be able to activate your device.

Where to find your product key depends on how you got your copy of Windows.

How to check if the Windows Key is Genuine or Legit

A copy of Windows is genuine only if it has been activated using a valid key. When you buy Windows Keys from Microsoft websites or get them from the OEMs, you can be sure that they are genuine. But you need to be careful if you buy them from third-party websites. So are Windows 10 keys that you buy from another site like Amazon, etc., legitimate or legal? That depends!

The major problem why many consumers get a license – which is sold at a very low price – and which later turns out to be invalid is because they may be deactivated product keys or Volume license keys. In this post, we will suggest a couple of ways to check if your Windows Product Licence Key is Genuine or Legit.

How to check if my Windows Key is Genuine

There are different types of keys. Windows 10 keys that consumer buys directly, are usually valid until the life of the machine (Retail and OEM).

There is one more type of key: Volume Licensing (MAK and KMS). Enterprise or big companies buy these keys to activate computers in bulk.

I have seen reports where many third-party sellers have sold these keys to consumers at a cheap price. These keys can be activated on multiple computers or work for a couple of months.

It is best not to purchase a key from someone who is not authorized to sell Windows 10 keys. And if somebody is authorized, and they offering low price, make sure to ask them if the key will work even after reinstallation.

There are two scenarios-

1. First where you have the key, and you want to check before actually using it.
2. Second is when you have already used it, but still, want to check.

Let’s take a look at how you can find if your Windows Key is genuine.

1] Use PID checker tools

We have two tools here – The Ultimate PID Checker and Microsoft PID Checker – which you can use to find out if the Windows 10 key is legit. While the Ultimate PID checker works for all versions before Windows 10, the Microsoft PID checker works for Windows 10 and Server 2016 only.

Download Microsoft PID Checker from here or Ultimate PID Checker from here. If the key is not legit or is invalid, the software will give you a response back. It can also be used to check the MAK count.

2] Check Windows Key with Software Licensing User Interface

The “dli” parameter will display current license information with activation status.

The result will also include the type of key (Retail, OEM, MAK, or KMS key). If the License status says “Licensed”, then you do not have a problem. If there is anything else, your key is not valid. Also if you see type as MAK or KMS, and you are a general consumer, you need to connect with the person from whom you bought the key, and get a Retail key.

3] Check Settings & Activation Status

There are few quick ways to check if the key you have used in not legit. The first thing you should is open Settings, and see if there is any warning about activation. If that’s not there, go to Update & Security > Activation and check the status. If there is an error and it doesn’t say that Windows is activated, you have a problem. In short the Windows 10 keys not legit or legal.

Report Windows 10 Activation errors

If your Windows 10 is genuine, but you still receive errors relating to an ingenuine software, you can follow up by using the steps below.

• Open Administrator command prompt then paste the code below and hit Enter

• Copy the result and upload to One Drive, then locate the txt file Windows created on your desktop then upload both to One Drive
• Go to the Microsoft Product Activation Call Center and lay your report.

Добрый день, сегодня расскажу как узнать лицензионный ли у вас ключ и для какой он редакции.

Сначало , объясню зачем это нужно и в каких случаях это может понадобиться:

У вас есть ключ windows, но вы не знаете на какую Операционную систему и какую редакцию он?

У вас установлена система, каким то лицом, который сообщил что ключ у вас лицензионный, а вы хотите это проверить.

Система проверки ключей Windows на лицензию довольно старая и не удобная.

Поэтому проверить абсолютно любой ключ не представляется возможным, только по факту активации вы поймете, пошлет вас Microsoft с этим ключом или нет. А до тех пор только и остается гадать, а пойдет ключ или нет. Нынче программы умеют только говорить для какой ОС и какой редакции, но что касается валидности, этот момент можно лишь проверить путем проверки.

Существует ряд программ, которые позволяют выяснить что у вас за ключ, какая у вас Операционная система и какая редакция.

Show Key Plus

Позволяет узнать какой ключ у вас установлен в системе, какой ключ зашит в биосе.

Если нужно достать ключ со старой системы, то можно воспользоваться функцией Retrive Key и там указать путь:

Таким образом можно достать ключ из прошлой системы. Помимо можно узнать к какой редакции ключ относится с помощью функции Check Edition .

Это программа имеется в двух видах, один ставится с Microsoft Store, другой портативный имеется в для разных разрядностей:

Программа позволяет проверить ключи на валидность и наличие их в базе заблокированных ключей, необходим доступ в интернет .

После замены винчестера на NVMe SSD вам так или иначе потребуется перенести на твердотельный накопитель операционную систему, в противном случае производительность компьютера не вырастет ни на йоту. Вот только в процессе клонирования диска или чистовой установки ОС может потребоваться лицензионный ключ. И если у обладателей retail-версии с этим не возникнет ровным счетом никаких проблем (код активации всегда можно найти внутри коробки с установочным DVD), то владельцев ПК или лэптопа с предустановленной Windows будет ожидать крайне неприятный сюрприз.

Лет 10 назад при покупке ноутбука или готового компьютера вы получали в свое распоряжение два диска: на одном из них находились необходимые драйверы, а на другом — дистрибутив операционной системы. Благодаря этому вы могли без труда переустановить Windows при возникновении каких-либо проблем программного характера или при замене системного накопителя, благо лицензионный ключ для активации ОС всегда можно было посмотреть на фирменной наклейке: обычно лейбл располагался на боковой или задней стенке корпуса ПК либо был приклеен к днищу лэптопа.

Времена изменились. Большинство современных машин вообще не оборудованы оптическими приводами, и в коробке с ноутбуком вы не найдете ни DVD, ни даже флешки с установочным образом операционной системы. А при осмотре корпуса максимум, что вы увидите, — логотип Windows без каких-либо дополнительных сведений о лицензии.

Сегодня производители готовых ПК и ноутбуков чаще всего поступают следующим образом:

• лицензионный ключ «зашивается» непосредственно в UEFI, от глаз рядового пользователя он скрыт;
• на системном накопителе создается раздел, содержащий бэкап операционной системы, — с его помощью компьютер или лэптоп можно вернуть к заводскому состоянию.

Это действительно удобно: вам больше не надо вбивать 25-значный код при переустановке операционной системы, да и о флешках с DVD можно навсегда забыть. Вот только у каждой медали есть и оборотная сторона. Стоит вам заменить жесткий диск на высокоскоростной SSD WD Black SN750 — и вы лишитесь дистрибутива Windows, а вместе с обновлением прошивки материнской платы может благополучно исчезнуть и ключ. Не говоря уже о том, что активация способна слететь даже после установки очередного апдейта из-за какого-нибудь бага.

Покупка новой лицензии взамен утраченной — перспектива не самая радужная (официальная цена Windows 10 Home составляет 199 долларов США, а Pro — и вовсе 289 долларов), поэтому мы настоятельно рекомендуем тщательно подготовиться к переходу на твердотельный накопитель, предварительно узнав заветную последовательность букв и цифр. Разберемся, как это сделать.

Извлекаем лицензионный ключ Windows из реестра с помощью скрипта

Данный способ является универсальным и подходит для Windows 7, 8.1 и 10. С помощью простого VBS-скрипта мы извлечем лицензионный ключ непосредственно из реестра операционной системы, куда он записывается в процессе активации.
