How to get old versions of macOS
If your Mac isn’t compatible with the latest macOS, you might still be able to upgrade to an earlier macOS, such as macOS Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, or El Capitan.
To get the latest features and maintain the security, stability, compatibility, and performance of your Mac, it’s important to keep your software up to date. Apple recommends that you always use the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.
Check compatibility
The version of macOS that came with your Mac is the earliest version it can use. For example, if your Mac came with macOS Big Sur, it will not accept installation of macOS Catalina or earlier.
If a macOS can’t be used on your Mac, the App Store or installer will let you know. For example, it might say that it’s not compatible with this device or is too old to be opened on this version of macOS. To confirm compatibility before downloading, check the minimum hardware requirements:
Download macOS using Safari on your Mac
Safari uses these links to find the old installers in the App Store. After downloading from the App Store, the installer opens automatically.
- macOS Catalina 10.15 can upgrade Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks
- macOS Mojave 10.14 can upgrade High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion
- macOS High Sierra 10.13 can upgrade Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion
Safari downloads the following older installers as a disk image named InstallOS.dmg or InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the disk image. It installs an app named Install [ Version Name ]. Open that app from your Applications folder to begin installing the operating system.
- macOS Sierra 10.12 can upgrade El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion
- OS X El Capitan 10.11 can upgrade Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard
- OS X Yosemite 10.10can upgrade Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard

High powered meets “Hi, everyone.”
macOS Monterey delivers powerful new user features and key technologies that help you build apps that bring users together. SharePlay provides easy ways to build all-new shared experiences, whether you’re creating a streaming app that offers shared playback or a collaborative design tool that enables simultaneous edits by users around the world. Games and pro apps take on a new dimension with powerful new features in Metal. And Object Capture in RealityKit helps you create 3D models from photos in record time.
SharePlay
SharePlay offers a new way for people to share your app. Media streaming apps can let users share content through the new Group Activities API with full-fidelity video and all syncing handled by the system. And for shared experiences beyond media streaming, the GroupSessionMessenger API offers a secure data channel that syncs information between multiple instances of your apps across multiple users.
Metal
This framework provides a platform-optimized, low-overhead API that lets you develop the latest 3D pro applications and amazing games using a rich shading language with tight integration between graphics and compute programs. New features include enhanced graphics and compute integration, function stitching, updates to Ray Tracing, GPU-accelerated ML training, and more.
Shortcuts
The power of Shortcuts is coming to macOS, so the capabilities of your app can be multiplied by exposing them as building blocks called actions. You can build Shortcuts actions on macOS whether your app is built with Mac Catalyst or AppKit, and your app can even run shortcuts itself.
Object Capture
Turn a series of 2D images from your iPhone or iPad into a photo-realistic 3D object that’s optimized for AR using Object Capture in RealityKit 2. This new macOS API gives you access to state-of-the-art photogrammetry software, so you can make unique 3D models with no 3D modeling expertise required.
Machine Learning
Build dynamic app features that leverage Create ML APIs to train models directly from user input or on-device behavior, allowing you to provide personalized and adaptive experiences while preserving user privacy. You can also take advantage of new templates and training capabilities, APls for Vision and Natural languages, and more.
ShazamKit
Enrich your app experience with audio recognition. Match music to the millions of songs in Shazam’s vast catalog or make any prerecorded audio recognizable by building your own custom catalog using audio from video, podcasts, and more.
TestFlight
Later this year, you’ll be able to invite testers to try out beta versions of your Mac apps and provide valuable feedback with TestFlight. You can invite up to 10,000 testers using just their email address or by sharing a public link.
Mac Catalyst
The macOS 12 SDK brings new and improved APIs for apps built with Mac Catalyst, allowing you to display pop-up buttons, tooltips, and a subtitle in a windowʼs titlebar. You can also provide Touch alternatives, keyboard navigation, and support for Siri intents, as well as allow users to print everywhere using Command-P, and more.

Streamlined apps
From full-height sidebars to refreshed toolbars, a clean new app design makes sure your content is always front and center.
Refreshed Dock
A sleek design update makes getting to your favorite apps even easier. And a new uniform shape for app icons adds consistency while letting the personality of Mac shine through.
Control Center for Mac
Instantly access the controls you use most — like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — and new controls to play music and enable Dark Mode for your display. Designed just for Mac, the new Control Center lets you add controls and drag favorites to the menu bar to customize it just for you.
Notification Center
A new design combines notifications and widgets in a single view for more information at a glance. Notifications are now grouped by app, and many are interactive — letting you do things like play new podcast episodes or learn more about Calendar invitations. And redesigned widgets come in three different sizes, so you can create the best view for you.
The all-new Safari. It’s love at first site.
Whether you’re streaming, searching, or just browsing, Safari is the best way to surf the web on all your Apple devices. And its biggest update ever brings brand-new customization options, improves on industry-leading performance and battery life, and introduces powerful features designed to protect your privacy.
Customizable start page
Set a custom background image to start every browsing session with a view that’s all your own. And decide what appears on your start page — such as your Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, Siri Suggestions, and even a new Privacy Report.
Safari extensions in the App Store
A new dedicated category in the App Store makes it easy to discover extensions from your favorite developers. New support for the WebExtensions API and migration tools allows developers to bring extensions from other browsers to Safari. And unlike other browsers, Safari asks you which websites each extension can access — keeping your browsing habits even more private.
Improved tab design
Tab lovers rejoice: An elegant new look means more tabs are visible at once. You can hover over any tab to bring up an instant page preview. And when you have several tabs open, Safari makes it easy to find the one you’re looking for with a new space-efficient design.
Beta Translation
Translate entire web pages between seven languages with a single click. 1
Password monitoring
Safari lets you know of any saved passwords that have been compromised in a data breach — and helps you upgrade them.
More about password security
Password monitoring
Safari automatically keeps an eye out for any saved passwords that may have been involved in a data breach. Using advanced cryptographic techniques, Safari periodically checks a derivation of your passwords against an updated list of compromised credentials. If a breach is discovered, Safari helps you upgrade your existing passwords. All this is done without revealing your password information to anyone — including Apple.
Privacy Report
Safari uses Intelligent Tracking Prevention to identify trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Click the Privacy Report button in your Safari toolbar for an instant snapshot of the cross-site trackers Safari is actively preventing from profiling you on that web page. And a new weekly Privacy Report on your start page shows how Safari protects your browsing across all the websites you visit.
More about Intelligent Tracking Prevention
Privacy Report
The Privacy Report makes it easy to understand how the websites you visit treat your privacy. See the total number of trackers that have tried to profile you, the percentage of websites containing trackers, and the most common tracker. There’s even a list of top trackers, and another list of the websites that use them.
Increased performance
We made the fastest desktop browser on the planet even faster.
Improved power efficiency
Safari lets you do more online on a single charge than any other browser.
Up to 1.5 hours more streaming videos compared with Chrome and Firefox 3
Up to 1 hour more browsing compared with Chrome and Firefox 3
