Java web start mac os

Mac OS X Platform Install FAQ

See JDK 7 and JRE 7 Installation Guide for general information about installing JDK 7 and JRE 7.

Q: Should I install the JRE or the JDK?

A: If you plan to run Java applications, install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The JRE is also referred to as Oracle Java. Once you have installed the JRE, you can launch Java applets and applications by double-clicking JAR files, JNLP files, and via the browser. Note that 32-bit browsers, such as Firefox in 32-bit mode, and Chrome, are not supported by the JRE.

If you plan to write Java applications, install the Java Development Kit (JDK).

Q: How do I install JavaFX?

A: The JavaFX SDK and Runtime are included in the installation of the JDK and JRE respectively, and they are integrated into the same directory structure. For information on how to work with JavaFX, see the JavaFX Documentation.

Q: How do I find out which version of Java is the system default?

A: If you have not yet installed Apple’s Java Mac OS X 2012-006 update, then you are still using a version of Apple Java 6 that includes the plug-in and the Java Preferences app. See Note for Users of Macs that Include Apple Java 6 Plug-in.

When you launch a Java application by clicking a JNLP file, or through the browser, it uses the installed JRE. Only one JRE can be installed. For more information, see Determining the Installed Version of the JRE.

When you run Java application from the command line, it uses the default JDK. If you do not develop Java applications, you do not need to worry about this. For more information, see Determining the Default Version of the JDK.

Q: How do I clear the Java cache?

From System Preferences, launch the Java Control Panel by clicking the Java icon in the Other section.

From the Java Control Panel, click Settings. in the Temporary Internet Files section of the General tab.

In the Temporary Files Settings window, click Delete Files. .

From the Delete Files and Applications dialog, select Cached Applications and Applets and click OK to clear those files from the cache.

To clear the applet and Web Start cache from a Terminal window, use the following command:

Q: How are Java updates managed on the Mac?

A: Every time you launch a Java applet or a Java Web Start application, the system first launches your program and then, in the background (so that performance of your Java application is not impacted), it determines if it has checked in the last 7 days for a Java update.

If an update is available, a Software Update window appears.

Selecting Install Update brings up a Downloading update progress bar.

After the download has completed, a window pops up, asking if you want to install and relaunch. You might want to finish your work before clicking Install and Relaunch.

At the end of the installation process, the installer notifies you if Java content is disabled in web browsers, and provides instructions for enabling it. If you previously chose to hide some of the security prompts for applets and Java Web Start applications, the installer provides an option for restoring the prompts. After the update is installed, the application is relaunched. If viewing an applet, the browser is relaunched.

Note that, if the application or applet does not automatically relaunch, be sure to manually relaunch so you can take advantage of the latest JRE.

If you choose Skip This Version, but later decide to check for an update, you can launch the Java Control Panel by clicking the Java icon in System Preferences. Go to the Update tab to initiate an update check.

If you choose Remind Me Later, you will be reminded of the update the next time you run Java.

Q: How do I uninstall Java?

A: Depending on your installation, see the related link:

Q: I have installed Java for OS X 2012-006 and Apple Java 6 can no longer be used for applets or Web Start. How do I get it back?

A: The Java for OS X 2012-006 update from Apple uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. You can download the latest version of Java from Oracle, which has improved security, reliability and compatibility.

If you prefer to continue using Apple’s Java 6 plug-in, you can follow the steps provided in How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 applet plug-in and Web Start functionality.

Q: After installing Java for OS X 2012-006, can I continue to use Apple’s Java 6 alongside the OS X JDK or JRE for Java 7?

A: If you want to continue to develop with Java 6 in a Terminal window you can modify the startup script for your favorite command environment. For bash, use this:

Some applications use /usr/bin/java to invoke Java. After installing Java for OS X 2012-006, /usr/bin/java will find the newest JDK installed, and will use that for all of the Java related command line tools in /usr/bin. You may need to modify those applications to find Java 6, or contact the developer for a newer version of the application.

Q: Where can I find more information about Oracle Java for the Mac?

A: You may find the following information useful:

Question: Q: Java Web start in Mac OSX 10.7.5

I can no longer use Java Web Start on my Macbook running Max OSX 10.7.5 and java version 1.6.0_37. When I attempt to launch a Java Web Start file, I get a popup that says:

To open this Web Start application, you need to download the Java Runtime Environment.

Click «More Info. » to visit the website for the Java Runtime Environment.

Clicking more info brings me to an Oracle Java download page for Java 7, which I do not which to install yet.

I have followed the steps at the above link, but it does not fix my problem; I get exactly the same popup window. I have done extensive Googling on other fixes to this without any luck.

My Java browser plugin is:

Java(TM) — Version: 14.5.0

Java Plug-In 2 for NPAPI Browsers

The thread at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4136010?start=15&tstart=0 suggests using plugin version 14.4.0, but I don’t know how to get that version.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!

I’m pretty sure my problem is about the same. Basically I cant install the Java 7 update cause I get an error message during download telling me I dont have mac os x 10.7 or higher. but I do. The Oracle Java update for Lion just isnt recognizing it! I have mac os x lion 10.7.5 on my laptop and for some reason, certain Pogo games wont load. it says its loading but never does and just closes. I went to the help page, did what it said, I scanned for current updates, installed them, rebooted then went back to Pogo and clicked on the java test link to see what version im running. I got the error «missing plug in» so I clicked on it and was taken to Java’s website for instructions, clicked «Download Java for Mac OS X,» then hit sytem requirements and saw that I had to be running os x 10.7.3 or above and I have 10.7.5. I was good to go, hit download and now Im here! Annoyed and confused beause updates and upgrades are pretty basic and simple. You either meet the system requirements or you dont. I meet them but cant get them cause it says I dont. its a viscious cycle and Im rambling like a madwoman! Is there an easy yes or no answer to this, maybe a follow steps 1,2,3 A,B,C you can post for non computer savvy moms? LOL I just want the handful of Pogo games I used to be able to play, to play again. nothing complicated! And why is it only some games and not all of them? Dont answer that, my hair already hurts. haha

Im not much of a computer person, but Im sure thats more than obvious, so my apologies if my problem has nothing to do with this one. tell me where to go or what forum to read thru for help. I also want to pologize in advance for the help Im gonna need after I get this updated! lol I hear the update has something screwy with the plugins being enabled and that its another nightmare with this whole new oracle java deal. Hmmm, maybe I shouldnt even do this java update. 😕 😁

Welcome to Apple Communities

Open Finder > Applications > Utilities and select Java Preferences

And the rest of the story is that will cause the OS to ask you if you want to install Java.

Let it install Java and then it should work. However, I have had problems with some of those programs not running in 64-bit mode.

So, if it still doesn’t work after installing Java, go to the Java Preferences and drag 32-bit java to the top of the list. That should have it use the 32-bit version.

If it still doesn’t work, go to the Advanced tab on the Java Prefs and set the security settings like this:

That helped me get another Java-based program to run.

Aug 24, 2012 4:35 AM

I have the same issue — jnlp files not executing automatically when downloaded via Safari. The jnlp file gets downloaded but does not start. I have to manually launch it (just by clicking it).

I do NOT have that problem when using Firefox: it offers a choice to either run the JNLP file using java web start, or to save it. Safari always downloads the jnlp but does not run it (or let me choose to run it).

I went to the Java preferences settings, but I see no setting that would change this behaviour. I tried changing the security level as you suggest. After that Safari does not even download the jnlp any longer. Firefox keeps on running as before (still gives me the option to run or save).

So, I am still searching for the reason why Safari does not run the JNLPs while other browsers do. Any ideas are welcome.

Do you have Safari set to open «Safe» files. However, it may not consider jnlp files safe, anymore.

Sep 26, 2012 3:48 AM

Thanks. That was it. I just set it to open safe files, and now it downloads and runs jnlp files automatically.

Sep 26, 2012 4:34 AM

Back to the same issue again. My company uses java and jnlp to activate our web conferencing tool. That used to work, but no longer does. I had not used this web conferencing tool for a while — probably a couple of months.

I had to use it last Monday, and I could not get it to work at all. On Firefox it downloads the jnlp file, then opens it. And the jnlp file is actually opened by xcode instead of being run by java web start.

In Safari, nothing at all happens, nothing gets downloaded, nothing gets executed.

The only way I can open the jnlp’s is via the command line (terminal) by explicitly calling the javaws command on the downloaded file.

If I understand it correctly one update removed and disabled all java plugins. I realised that when I could not find any java settings of java applications. So I installed the latest java update (java 7). But the command-line java in terminal is still java 6.

I would be happy if I could just force the jnlp’s to open using java web start. But it is not offered by the «open with» choice. I can’t even find the java web start anywhere.

My patience with macOS is really wearing thin. There are so many malfunctions and frustrations that I am seriously considering giving up and going back to a Windows platform.
