Welcome to the HP Community Forum — we are a community of HP enthusiasts!
HP simplePass Identity Protection has been disabled after upgrading to Windows 10
The migration to Windows 10 has pushed the Operating System beyond the point where there are HP Drivers available for your computer. The lack of HP Drivers (for Windows 10) may increase the challenges you face when trying to install programs that are dependent on the HP infrastructure.
Simply put: Some programs may not function as expected (or hoped).
Synaptics / Validity Driver
If you are not yet doing so, you need to install a Driver that is at least compatible with Windows 8.
If your Validity Driver is not Windows 8.x compliant, install this Driver:
Windows Hello — fingerprint logon
You must be able to enable the fingerprint reader to use fingerprint logon (provided by Windows) and / or the HP SimplePass program (login and websites / passwords).
Windows 10 security requires that you assign a PIN login to enable the fingerprint reader.
In most cases, once you have a fingerprint driver installed that Windows can use, you can then assign the PIN number and then enable the fingerprint reader (scanner on your notebook).
Windows 10 > Settings > Account > Sign-in Options > PIN number >> PIN assignment is mandatory
Regardless of whether you intend to use SimplePass (or other third party security software), there are prerequisites for setting and using the Native Windows fingerprint logon. The system recognizes the Windows Logon software as “primary” and requires that the Windows fingerprint logon be set up and functional.
If you have an old version of HP SimplePass installed, uninstall it > reboot the computer > proceed
If all else fails and you cannot enable the fingerprint reader in Settings, try installing the latest version of HP SimplePass > Boot computer > enable PIN and fingerprint reader.
Windows 10 and its accompanying Updates appears to have (finally) created an environment in which the old Series 6 (AuthenTec) HP SimplePass no longer functions.
This means: HP SimplePass versions 6.x are likely to fail when installed on Windows 10.
This is not a failure of HP — the code writers (authors) that provided the old Series 6.x HP SimplePass program sold their company to Apple. The program code cannot be updated. Series 6 HP SimplePass is supported to the extent that it is still available (at this writing) for download and use.
This means: If you were running HP SimplePass version 6.x you will likely need to abandon the program and migrate to the supported version of HP SimplePass.
To that end, the latest version of HP SimplePass (at this writing) is compatible with Windows 10:
- Series 8 is not an upgrade of Series 6 — these are two separate, competing programs written by different companies.
- Series 6 HP SimplePass (by AuthenTec) and Series 8 HP SimplePass (by Softex) are not compatible.
- There is no conversion program for encrypted Export of websites / passwords. This means that even should you have your Series 6 Export file (.tsd), you cannot use it or convert it for use with Series 8 (Vault file .opi).
- Series 6 HP SimplePass cannot be on the computer at the same time as Series 8 HP SimplePass.
- You can switch Series.

Not sure what happened to my original post, seems to have been removed for some reason.
Last week I purchased the above notebook, a HP Envy 17-N152NA, model N9Q54EA which both the store specification and the specification on the HP website say that the note book has HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software but for some reason mine does not.
I have looked in Recovery manager and it does not even list it to be reinstalled..
It does have the fingerprint scanner, and the biometric option in device manager and I can set up a PIN and then setup fingerprint in setting although that is greyed out as I have yet to add a pin.
I have noticed that i DO NOT have biometric options listed in control panel which it seems it should, or would this appear when the software is installed?
If I go to the HP Support and drivers page for the notebook HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software is listed, do I just need to download this? Is it not needed as it appeares Windows 10 will use its own method? or are the specifications incorrect? I suspect not as both HP and the store say it has the option and HP show the software to download.
Thanks and sorry sorry for all the questions and if my original post broke any rules..
Hope you can offer advice (again) on all the questions above.

I recently replaced a HDD with a new SSD into my Hp Pavilion dm4 1265dx and did a re-installation of windows. I have already downloaded and installed most of the drivers required but I am having a hard time trying to find and install Hp Simple pass identity/finger print reader.
Is there anyway to re-install Hp simple pass without having to pay? Please and Thank you

This is the Digital Persona flavor of HP SimplePass. Acorrding to what I can find, this is the kind of Security software you need for that computer.
Driver installs FIRST — reboot.
Software installs Second
After you get the software installed, and your fingerprints enrolled, you can import your password file that you created previously. (If you did not do this, now is a good time to learn how. see Dragon Tips!)
NOTE: This Tip is valid for most versions of Digital Persona ..
Export the DP Database / Make a Backup:
Start/Open Digital Persona > scan your fingerprint to open > Online Accounts > Manage >
See Import and Export > Select Export
> Export online account data from this computer >
Scan your fingerprint > type your password >
Browse to your selected folder > type in a name > Finish
Keep the Export file safe. Re-export on a regular basis. If you have to reinstall your software, you will be able to use this file to restore your passwords.
I hope this helps!

One more question, the HP simple pass you recommended did indeed work, but it doesn’t give me the ability to encrpyt files with my finger print like the oem did.
Is there any way to reobtain that feature of Hp simple pass?

HP SimplePass — KeepSafe software
I am glad your fingerprinter and software are now working!
Even though HP sometimes calls Digital Persona security software by the name SimplePass, it is not the same software.
OK, having said that, the older version(s) of Digital Persona (pre-4.1.x) did have the ability to encrypt files and then unencrypt them using two executable programs within the Digitial Persona folder. The ability may have been removed from later versions, though if one has the two programs used for the process of encryption and file recovery, the facility would still work. Some of the fancy bits are lost (click and encrypt/decrypt), but the functionality remains intact. This is based on experience.
Digital Persona Encryption Programs:
DPFIleEn.exe File Encrypt
DPRecDsk.exe File Recover (Decrypt)
Even if one could get this to work by obtaining / recovering the two programs, I recommend that other encryptions methods are used to encrypt files and folders . The software is old, the architecture (computer hardware) on which the software runs is older that what is sold today. If something should happen and one could not recover or use the executables (the encryption software) for any reason at all, then the encrypted files would be lost.
HP SimplePass — A Method for Encryption
Here is a possible solution. Understand that I do not recommend encryption as a means to keep your files safe unless you have the real need for it. There is risk of data loss. This method in particular is one based on one Vendor’s recommendation. I do not have anything vested in this Vendor and do not recommend any particular software for personal gain. I have experience with HP SimplePass.
For an older computer, it might still be possible to use HP SimplePass and the KeepSafe software to encrypt data.
- Additional hardware — one possibility: Eikon Mini Fingerprinter available from AuthenTec for about $10 + shipping US price. Comes with TrueSuite software, which is similar to the primitive, but usable HP SimplePass version 5.1.x (original HP SimplePass). The fingerprinter is tiny, just over one inch (28.65 mm) at its largest dimension and can be plugged into any USB 2.0 (or 3.0) port and left there.
- It appears that TrueSuite Software comes with the KeepSafe software plugin. You may also purchase KeepSafe, though you must have a companion software to run it (some version of TrueSuite that supports it or HP SimplePass from AuthenTec).
Optional for Operation:
HP SimplePass V5.4.0.620 from AuthenTec. After the TrueSuite software (that comes with the Eikon Mini Fingerprinter) is set up, one can download (for free) and install this version of HP SimplePass from AuthenTec right over the top of the TrueSuite Software. (It is recommended that one does EXPORT any webcards with the TrueSuite software before the SimplePass installation.) Once HP SimplePass is installed, the software will behave and look like the true HP SimplePass with the more advanced features.
More About KeepSafe:
The KeepSafe mechanism works differently than the old Digital Personal encryption in that the files are kept within one folder rather than kept where ever the user decides (spread at random within the computer).
How-To and FAQ for KeepSafe:
Be real careful with this software. This is not any safer to use than was the Digital Persona Encryption programs in that if you lose the HP SimplePass software: The ability to use the KeepSafe encryption software is directly tied to the ability to use HP SimplePass. Pay attention to the warning in the file Location of KeepSafe archive .
I hope that helps. At the least, it does give you an alternative. I am using the Eikon Mini and the setup explained herein on an older HDX18t. I have successfully installed the Mini on a Desktop, too. Nice.
NOTE: I do have the KeepSafe software, and I did test it for this Post, I do not any longer use encrypted filing of this sort. Personal choice based on experience. I had to dig may way out of locked file encryption one too many times due to unrelated system issues.
