С недавнего времени Google Docs позволяет просматривать и редактировать документы в автономном режиме, без подключение к интернету. Для этого Google Docs использует Google Gears, который добавляет расширение функциональности в автономном режиме непосредственно в браузер. Google Docs можно открыть в автономном режиме, набрав docs.google.com в адресной строке браузера или с помощью ярлыка на рабочем столе, который создается после процесса установки.

Решил написать небольшую заметку на эту тему, т.к. сам уже пользуюсь данным расширением функциональности.

Установка Google Docs Offline.

Нажмите ссылку «Offline» в верхнем правом углу Google Docs. Появится диалоговое окно с предлложением установить Google Gears, необходимый для работы в автономном режиме. Нажмите кнопку «Get Google Gears now».

После этого Вам будет предложено разрешить docs.google.com в качестве надежного узла. Установите флажок «I trust this site. Allow it to use Google Gears». Затем нажмите кнопку «Allow».

После этого вы сможете изменять уже существующие документы в любом месте без подключения к интернету.

Чтобы получить доступ Google Docs offline наберите docs.google.com в адресной строке браузера или откройте с помощью ярлыка на рабочем столе, который создается после процесса установки.

Синхронизация документов при первом запуске.

После установки при запуске Google Docs в течении некоторого времени происходит передача данных с сервера на ваш компьютер.

После окончания синхронизации вы увидете окошко с сообщением «Status: synchronized».

Работа в автономном режиме.

В правом верхнем углу Google Docs вы увидите индикатор. При работе в автономном режиме, он будет серго цвета. Когда вы снова будете в Интернете, цвет поменяется на зеленый. Также, в офф-лайне вы будете видеть в верхней части окна желтое сообщение о том, что вы работаете в автономном режиме.

Когда подключение к Интернету отсутствует, Google Docs использует информацию, которая хранится на жестком диске, т.е. при работе в автономном режиме, изменения сохраняются на вашем компьютере. При подключении к Интернету происходит синхронизация с Google Docs.

При работе в автономном режиме, вы можете просматривать и редактировать любой из ваших существующих текстовых документов. Но создавать новые документы в автономном режиме нельзя. Однако этот недостаток можно обойти: достаточно заранее создать несколько пустых документов, которые, в свою очередь, уже можно редактировать в офф-лайне.

К сожалению, таблицы и презентации в автономном режиме пока можно только просматривать.

Сохранение изменений при работе в автономном режиме.

Во время работы в автономном режиме ваши изменения будут автоматически сохраняться точнто так же, как и при работе в сети. Однако для того чтобы эти изменения были сохранены на сервере, необходимо подключиться к Интеренету и зайти на Google Docs в том же браузере, в котором вы работале в офф-лайне. После этого автоматически будет произведена синхронизация данных.

Меры безопасности во время работы в автономном режиме.

Стоит обратить внимание, что Google Docs Offline необходимо использовать только на своем личном компьютере. В противном случае, ваши документы могут быть доступны для любого пользователя общего компьютера.

• Microsoft Windows XP or Vista with Firefox 1.5+ or Internet Explorer 6+
• Apple Mac OS X (10.2+) with Firefox 1.5+
• Linux with Firefox 1.5+

FF3 не поддерживается. Над Сафари работы ведутся, обещают в будущем поддержку.

Working with Google Drive on an operating system like Windows and macOS makes using the cloud storage service particularly easy. Still, it’s just as easy to use Google Drive on Linux.

Use Google Drive on Linux With a Web Browser

Google Drive can be used with any modern web browser. Well-known web browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and Opera work well with Google Drive, as do lesser-known web browsers like Epiphany, Midori, and Vivaldi. Google Drive on Linux also works with accounts that use two-factor authentication (2FA).

The one feature that suffers is the ability to work offline with documents in Drive. The only web browsers this feature works in are Google Chrome and Chromium, the open-source version of Chrome. To make this happen, do the following:

Open Google Chrome.

Go to Google Drive.

Select the Gear icon.

Select Settings.

In the Offline section, select the Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer so that you can edit offline check box.

You will not find the offline setting in either the Firefox or Opera web browsers.

You may be prompted to install the Google Docs Offline extension.

Use Google Drive on Linux With GNOME

If your distribution uses the GNOME Desktop Environment, you can add your Google Drive account to the Online Accounts feature. Doing this integrates your Google account with the GNOME Calendar, the Evolution Groupware Suite (email, to-dos, calendar, tasks, and contacts), and more. To do this, follow these steps:

From the GNOME Activities Overview, open Settings.

Select Online Accounts.

Select Google.

Walk through the account sign-in process.

With the sign-in process complete, select the Google services you want to connect to the GNOME desktop. Then, close that window and the Settings window.

Open the GNOME file manager to see the new listing in the left sidebar with your Google account. Select the account to mount your Google Drive.

You can open, edit, create, and delete files from that location as if these files are local to your drive.

Because Google Drive is mounted as a remote file system, the amount of time it takes before the directory is ready to use is based on how many files and folders are saved to Google Drive. Furthermore, every time you reboot the desktop, you must remount the Drive account by opening the file manager and selecting the Google Account entry.

Use Google Drive on Linux With a Third-Party Solution

Google hasn’t created a Drive client for Linux. However, there are a few tools available from third-party developers. Insync is one tool that syncs Google Drive to Linux.

Insync is a cross-platform Drive-to-Desktop sync tool that backs up and syncs Google Drive to the Linux desktop. There’s a cost associated with Insync, though; a single Insync license costs $29.99 per user account. If you’re a Google Drive power user who works on the Linux desktop, the software is worth the cost.

To install Insync on Linux, do the following:

Instructions below are demonstrated using the Elementary OS, which is based on Ubuntu Linux.

Save the file to /home/USER/Downloads, where USER is your Linux username.

Open a terminal window.

Change to the directory containing the file with the command:

Install the new file with the command:

Allow the installation to complete.

Start an instance of the newly installed Insync from the desktop menu.

Once you start Insync, you’ll be prompted to enable Nautilus (file manager) integration. When prompted, select Yes to add sync integration with the GNOME file manager.

A terminal window prompts you for your user password (for the installation of the necessary Nautilus integration components). During this installation, you are prompted to type y, then press any key to continue.

Another new window opens, where you can start the Insync Service. Select Start Insync. Then select Close.

In the Insync window asking you to add a Google account, select Add a Google account, then proceed through the account sign-in wizard.

This opens your default web browser, where you’ll sign in to your Google Account. After you sign in, select Allow to give Insync permission to access your Google account.

The Insync window opens and walks you through the process of choosing a default location to sync Drive to your desktop.

By default, this location is /home/USERNAME/GOOGLEACCOUNT, where USERNAME is your Linux username, and GOOGLEACCOUNT is the email address associated with your connected Google Account. To change the location, select Change on the last screen of the wizard, then select a different location for the sync.

You’re now ready to enjoy an outstanding Google Drive-to-Linux-Desktop sync experience.

Can Google Sheets be opened/edited in Ubuntu?

I have a number of Google Sheets (spreadsheets) saved on Google Drive normally accessed from an android phone collaboratively but would like to edit them from within Ubuntu.

I can save the file as either an .ods (LibreCalc) or .xlsx (MS Excel) file from android and whilst either formats can be edited in LibreCalc I cannot find a way of successfully re-saving the file in the Sheets format back to Google Drive for continued collaboration.

Use Google Drive files offline

This answer requires Google Chrome web browser to be installed and regularly updated.

If you aren’t connected to a Wi-Fi or mobile network, you can still view and edit files, including:

• Google Docs
• Google Sheets
• Google Slides

Open files offline

To turn on offline access:

• You must be connected to the Internet.
• Use the Google Chrome browser.
• Don’t use incognito mode.
• Install and enable Google Docs offline Chrome extension. The Google Docs extension makes it possible to edit your documents, spreadsheets and presentations when you aren’t connected to the internet. Plus, you can copy and paste between Docs, Sheets and Slides.
• Make sure you have enough free space on your device to save your files.

Open your Google Drive files offline

Open Chrome. Make sure you’re signed in to Chrome.

Check the box in the Offline category next to «Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer so that you can edit offline.»

How to Use Google Docs Offline on Windows 10, Mac, and Linux

We show you how to make use of the Google Docs offline extension to edit Google Docs when you’re away from a Wi-Fi network. Offline editing Google Docs makes the browser based office alternative even better.

Here at WinBuzzer, Microsoft Word is naturally our text editor of choice. However, that doesn’t stop us from acknowledging that Google Docs is a strong, free alternative. The only real thing holding it back is that it requires an internet connection to use. Or, at least, it used to. Today we’re going to show you how to use Google Docs offline so that you can stay productive on the move.

Offline Google Docs via extension

The method we’ll outline below makes use of the Google Docs Offline extension, which comes straight from Google. However, it’s worth noting that it’s not limited to documents – you can also use this to edit Google Sheets offline, access saved Drive files, or change your presentations.

Naturally, though, you’ll need a browser that supports extensions. More specifically, it needs to a Chromium-based browser – Firefox users are out of luck. If you use the new Microsoft Edge, however, you can still install Google’s extension, but you’ll need to put up with the scary warnings it may give. Let’s get started:

How to Use Google Sheets, Google Drive, or Google Docs Offline

As mentioned, offline editing in Google Docs uses Google’s official extension. You can download that here. Once it’s complete, head to docs.google.com to get started.

1. Open the Google Docs hamburger menu
   

If you’re unfamiliar with the turn, that’s the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner of your browser window.

Turn on Google Docs offline mode

Look towards the bottom of the Settings window, where you’ll find the “Offline” heading. On the right-hand side, switch the toggle and press “OK”.

Note that you won’t go offline immediately. You’re simply enabling the functionality ready for when you lose connection.

Open a document’s fly-out menu

In your main Google Docs or Google Sheets menu, find a file you’d like to make available offline and click the three dots underneath its name.

Switch the Google Docs offline toggle

Underneath the “Open in new tab” option, you’ll see “Available offline”. Switch the toggle next to it to prepare it for offline usage.

Look for the offline checkmark

If the document was saved correctly, you’ll see a checkmark in a circle underneath the document name, to the right of the time stamp.

Kill your internet connection and work offline

Press the airplane mode button on your device and then attempt to access the document. If successful, the document should open as usual, but with a lightning bolt next to the favorite button. Hovering it will show the “You are offline” tooltip.
