Basic purposes of the fire doors
The doors resistant to fire and flame can withstand exposure to fire, flame, smoke and other fire related hazards for a specified period of time and may slow fire spread to the immediate vicinity, as well as surrounding areas and adjoining premises that may be threatened by the fire. Being resistant to fire, these doors provide opportunities to safely evacuate people and properties and also keep free, unobstructed access for fire fighters to extinguish the fire or to localize the ignition sources.
In accordance with the statistical data, in the event of fire the absence of the exits, evacuation and escape routes, means of egress which are kept clear of obstruction or the absence of opportunities to leave premises on time are the principal factors behind the fire casualties.
Fire doors selection criteria
The fire resistance capacity (fire rating) is the principal technical parameter of the fire door. The doors are “rated” by time (in minutes or hours). Such a rate is meant a time period within which the door with fire resistant core can withstand exposure to the extremely high temperature and prevent spreading of fire and smoke into the premises where people can be. Fireproof doors can have a fire resistance of 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes.
It is a must that a basic fire door requirements and types of their structure to be determined when the project for construction of the new building or renovation of the existing one is developed. When the construction project is in developing stage it is necessary to consider the purpose of the projected premises, the number of premises and storeys, fire resistance class and rate, presence of different fire fighting systems, etc.
Production materials
The fire doors are mainly produced from steel, aluminum and wood materials with the application of heat-resistant and heat-insulating fillings.
In our catalogue we offer a wide selection of the highest quality fire doors. The doors are made in accordance with modern technologies with a high quality guarantee, have been tested in accordance with the established European standards.
Basic purposes of the fire rated glass doors
Fire glass doors are used to prevent fire and smoke spread, to provide a safe escape and routes to evacuate people and essential equipment and also, free and unobtrusive access for fire-fighters to extinguish a fire.
Unlike to metallic fire door, the glass one is classified into light transparent and glazed doors. If the transparency of the inter layer is no less than 25% of the total square of a door, the fire glass doors are rated light transparent and if such a transparency is less than 25% of the door square, they are classified as glazed doors.
The principal difference between fire rated glass door and its wood and metallic counterparts is the excellent visual look of the fire glass door allowing them to perfectly fit into any interior.
Applications of the glass doors
Fire rated glass light transparent doors are mainly recommended for installation in:
- Office premises;
- Premises with fire-related hazards;
- Stairwells exits;
- Lift lobbies exits;
- Floor passages;
- Escape routes from corridors.
Glazed fire doors must be installed as entrance to:
- Substations;
- Ventilation chambers;
- Premises within thermal points;
- Storages for flammable materials;
- Different technical premises located in the ground and underground of the buildings.
Key benefits and advantages
The glass doors provide an opportunity to visually control of whether any emergency event such as fire occurs in the closed premise without entering into it and this is the key and principal advantage of them.
In addition, the fire rated glass doors have a perfect service and operation qualities and the following performance attributes:
- Excellent thermo insulation;
- Good acoustic insulation;
- Strong, stable and durable construction.
Purchasing fire glass door in our store, you can used them not only as entrance door but also as office doors that fit to any interior, not depending on functionality and use of the premise where the door will be installed.

Fire windows 101
If you’re new to fire windows, this section will help you get started. It explains the fire resistance rating system, the construction of our main window types and some terms people use when talking about windows. To find out more, feel free to get in touch on (09) 579-8895.
Fire resistance ratings
The New Zealand system for fire resistance rating (FRR) is based on the British Standard. It is very similar to the Australian Standard, but with some variations. The various elements of a building, such as walls, floors, doors and windows are all rated using this system.
The rating is made up of these four measures. The first three are measured in minutes.
- Stability: This rating will always be zero for a window (because they’re not load bearing) and is written as a dash. Stability is how long an element can retain its load bearing capacity during a standard fire test that includes some extra load expected in a fire.
- Integrity: How long an element will protect people and goods from flames and hot gasses. This is typically determined by the materials’ flame erosion resistance, as well as the tightness of joints and their ability to limit smoke and gas penetration.
- Insulation: How long it takes for the temperature of the non-fire side of the element to rise by the maximum permitted amount.
- Smoke rating — This is not time related. An element is either smoke rated or it is not. The letters Sm show when it is. Through their service life the smoke seals are often overlooked as a maintenance item, yet their smoke control role in a fire is arguably the most significant element of life preservation in a fire.
Example
A fire resistance rating lists the four measures in the order above. If a window has an FRR of -/60/60 Sm it means the stability is nil, integrity 60 minutes, insulation 60 minutes and it is smoke rated.
NZ Fire Doors window Construction
Our windows are made of responsibly sourced materials that provide their tested and proven fire ratings, while ensuring they can provide the desired architectural aesthetics within your construction budget. NZFD offer internal window units, i.e. room dividers or light wells in timber frames.
All fire windows are non-opening fixed pane in single or multiple panes in a range of combinations. All our fire windows are manufactured in our NZ factory using fire rated glass that we stock and cut to size ourselves. Please contact the sales department to discuss unit and pane sizing and price options.
Window talk
Here’s a brief explanation of some terms people use when talking about windows. If there’s anything else you don’t understand, please get in touch. We’d be happy to explain.
Window: A standalone unit not connected to a doorset. When attached to fire rated doors, they are defined as a sidelight or overlight. Because windows have different regulations covering their dimensions and use as compared to sidelights and overlights, they are covered here in a separate section.
Trim size: Also known as the ‘hole in the wall’ this refers to the dimensions of the prepared opening for a window.
Installation tolerances: Allowed gaps, see installation details.
Fire window: A complete unit made up of the glass, frame, and seals that are all appropriate to the window’s fire rating.

Features
Solid Swiss Steel Profiles
Steel profiles provide units with their structural integrity, and as such, are critical to the longevity of the unit. All FireRock steel windows and doors are made from solid Swiss steel profiles from Montanstahl. By partnering with a global leader in architectural steel profiles who is renowned for superior quality and structural excellence, we can ensure that you’ll be receiving a high-quality unit that will last for 75+ years.
Narrow Steel Muntins
Muntins (also sometimes called “glazing bars” or “sash bars”) are the smaller bars that separate pieces of glass in the same window. All 4 of our profile systems are equipped with narrow steel muntins (going as narrow as ¾” on some units) for ultra-slim sightlines and expansive viewing areas. These narrow bars allow you to maximize the wide expanses of glass these units are known for.
Hot Dip Galvanization
Rust is the #1 enemy of steel, and it is guaranteed to occur if bare metal becomes exposed to oxygen and moisture. Therefore, rust prevention must be the first priority for any steel window or door. That’s why FireRock uses hot dip galvanization (rated to G90) on all our steel windows and doors. This provides a long-lasting rust prevention that will have a direct impact on the longevity and maintenance of your units.
Cured Paint Finish
While most homeowners are most concerned with how the finished product looks, it is necessary to remember that the finish is an important surface barrier against normal wear and tear. FireRock steel windows and doors are finished off with a cured paint finish. This finish type provides the sleek, smooth surface texture that most people associate with steel while allowing for easy, inconspicuous on-site touch-ups, which maximizes the longevity and minimizes maintenance costs of the unit.
True Thermal Breaks
Thermally broken steel windows and doors from FireRock utilize a resin isolator to separate the exterior frames from the interior frames. Thermally breaking the unit prevents both heat and cold from transferring through the frames altogether, alleviating issues that might be caused by extreme environments, such as condensation. Thermally broken units are IECC code compliant nationwide.
Simplified Installation
FireRock offers installation of our steel windows and doors anywhere in the contiguous United States. However, for contractors who want to install the units themselves, our units come with tabs or flanges that are customized to suit wall condition, making installation simple.
Hardware
Steel windows and doors from FireRock are a custom product, designed specifically to fit your project. We offer a wide variety of entry set styles and hardware finishes from leading manufactures like EMTEK and Baldwin. And for an even more customized product, we offer custom preparation for customer-provided hardware.
