Windows Installer folder

First, to do any editing in c:\windows\installer, you may need to disable User Account Control. User Account Control (aka UAC) is the protection mechanism that prevents unintentional or unauthorized folder, file, and system changes.

The «installer» folder resides in a protection area that is governed by UAC, as do all files/folders in the c:\windows directory. so you will want to temporarily disabled UAC to remove the corrupted MSI file.

The quickest way to disable UAC is to click Start, select Run. then type msconfig. Select the Tools tab and scroll down until you find «Disable UAC». Click on this option one time and it will turn blue. Then click OK. This change will require you to reboot your PC, so reboot now.

After you log back in you will see a small popup box related to msconfig that you didn’t see before. this box is simply telling you about changes made with msconfig before you rebooted; it is informational only and can be removed by clicking OK.

Now that UAC is disabled you can move to step 2. getting into the «Installer» folder.

The «installer» folder is a protected operating systems location. This means that even if you tell Windows Vista to make hidden folders viewable, you still will not be able to see the «installer» folder in c:\windows without making a second, less secure, file system change.

While you can easily make this change to make the «installer» folder viewable, for a one-time navigation to that location, you may find this approach more efficient.

Click the start button, choose Run. then type c:\windows\installer. At this point, an explorer window should appear that reveals the contents of the installer folder.

BE CAREFUL 🙂 Now that you are in this folder, you will want to be very careful with what you do in there. The «delete» key is not your friend in most cases. and it is less so in a folder like c:\windows\installer.

The c:\windows\installer folder stores installation information for all programs that were installed onto your PC. If you remove something from this folder, you may get unpredictable results with one or more of your applications. this is especially frustrating if you delete an MSI file for a program you use less frequently. meaning, you delete the MSI file today, but dont see strange behavior until you try to access the application several days/weeks later.

Norton may have identified b20d81.msi as corrupt for any number of reasons; unless this file is specifically flagged as a virus or spyware, I suggest you isolate this file someplace for a couple of months. perhaps on a flash drive that doesnt contain any critical files. this way you will have a backup of it in case you begin to notice strange behavior with your applications.

When you are finished, dont forget to turn UAC back on. you can easily do this by running msconfig again (click start. then select run and type msconfig, choose «tools» and turn UAC back on, then reboot).

Можно ли удалять файлы из C:\Windows\Installer в Windows 10

Если вы загляните в папку C:\Windows\Installer (папка скрыта по умолчанию, но в нее легко попасть, введя в адресную строку проводника путь к папке, либо включив показ и скрытых и защищенных системных файлов Windows 10), в ней вы обнаружите набор файлов с расширениями .msi и .msp, а также папки: состоящие из кодов и отдельные с расширением .tmp.

Можно ли это всё удалить? Короткий ответ: нет, не следует. Вы можете безопасно удалить лишь папки .tmp, но они и не занимают много места. Однако, существует возможность в какой-то степени очистить эту папку, о чем в следующем разделе.

А сначала о том, что представляют собой эти файлы в Windows\Installer — это файлы установщиков программ (тех, что установлены на вашем компьютере), использующих для установки службу «Установщик Windows» и они используются когда программа обновляется или когда вы её, наоборот, удаляете через «Панель управления» — «Программы и компоненты». Также они могут использовать для функции «Исправить установку». Соответственно, при их удалении могут возникнуть проблемы при выполнении этих задач.

Как очистить папку Windows\Installer

Иногда случается, что в этой папке присутствуют установщики программ .msi и .msp, более не используемые нигде в системе и такие файлы можно удалить, но для этого нужно определить, какие именно это файлы. Примечание: теоретически далее описанные шаги могут привести к нежелательным последствиям.

Для этого можно использовать бесплатную утилиту PatchCleaner, официальный сайт разработчика — https://www.homedev.com.au/Free/PatchCleaner (для загрузки используйте вкладку «Downloads» в верхней части описания программы).

После запуска PatchCleaner, утилита проанализирует содержимое указанной папки и, если среди файлов в C:\Windows\Installer окажутся файлы, которые более не используются (они будут отображены в разделах «Excluded by filters» и «Orphaned». Такие файлы можно сразу удалить (Delete) или переместить в указанную папку «Move» (лучше сначала использовать второй вариант, чтобы убедиться, что всё работает как прежде).

Также, если нажать по «Details» рядом с количеством найденных файлов, в том числе используемых в настоящее время (still used), можно увидеть информацию о том, каким программам соответствуют найденные файлы .msi и .msp, сколько места на диске они занимают и, возможно, принять решение об удалении некоторых из этих программ, если вы ими более не пользуетесь и они не требуются для правильного функционирования другого ПО.

Здравствуйте. Подскажите, пожалуйста, а можно удалять файлы из папки «C:\Windows\servicing\LCU»
После ежемесячных обовлений туда записываются файлы типа Package_for_RollupFix

18362.535.1.6 и уже занимают довольно много
места (до 6-8 Гб)

Здравствуйте.
Если не ошибаюсь, встроенная утилита очистки дика умеет вычищать из этой папки то, что можно:
Win+R, вводим cleanmgr жмем Enter.
Нажимаем кнопку «очистить системные файлы». И чистим обновления Windows.

Встроенная утилита не чистит эту папку. Очистка хранилища компонентов, программа DISM++ тоже не видят эту папку. Все это чистит «C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download»

Так эта папка и предыдущих Windows присутствует. Помнится, лет так десять назад, когда мой HDD был скудного объёма и папка Installer всё росла и росла я начал искать ответ что же с ней делать. Тогда я как дилетант придумал что перенесу её на другой раздел, а ярлык к ней помещу в C:\Windows, но фокус не получился. Пошел я дальше искать ответ на просторах интернета и наткнулся на одном из похожих сайтов кстати тоже очень полезный для начинающих пользователей, но связь я как-то с ним потерял ну та ладно так вот наткнулся на статью о том, как перенести папку Installer на другой раздел диска без потери работоспособности ОС. Ответ был прост создание символьной ссылки она же жесткая ссылка на тот момент для меня понять, что к чему было сложновато и долго помучился пока понял, что к чему за то теперь для меня этот опыт был полезен и часто бывает полезен. Если кому интересно, то коротко объясню. Запускаете командную строку от имени администратора вводите команду «mklink /j c:\windows\installer d:\installer» без кавычек и при условии, что у вас системный раздел С, а куда будете переносить папку installer это раздел D или другая буква соответственно указываете вашу и не маловажный момент перед тем как вы нажмёте Enter в командной строке папка installer должна быть перенесена на раздел D. Всё теперь ОС думает, что папка installer находится на прежнем месте, но её там нет при этом всё работает, как и до переноса папки. Проверено на личном опыте так что не опасайтесь тем более это всё можно вернуть в исходное состояние просто удаляете ярлык к папке installer из C:\Windows и папку Installer с раздела D возвращаете обратно. После всех манипуляций лучше перезагрузить ПК так на всякий случай. Да ещё в той статье было написано цитирую (Мне символьные ссылки нужны довольно редко, и я без проблем запомнил команду командной строки и использую первый метод. Но в Windows есть альтернативный способ для папок:
1) Копируем папку, для которой нам нужно создать символьную ссылку.
2) Идём в каталог:
C:\Users\*имя пользователя*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts
Папка AppData скрытая, для того чтобы включить отображение скрытых папок, воспользуйтесь этой статьей.
3) Жмём правой клавишей по окну каталога и выбираем «Вставить ярлык». Система создаст символьную ссылку до исходного каталога и теперь её можно перенести в нужное для вас место и переименовать) но этот метод мне лично не понравился так как через раз получалось добиться результата и в чём проблема я, так и не понял, да и не стал разбираться так как набил руку на выполнение команды проще и быстрее. Буду рад если кому пригодится и надеюсь, что написал понятно. Спасибо за внимание!

У моего ноутбука «ASUS» ОЗУ 1.00 ГБ, это, наверное, все из-за виндовс-установщика, он занял память, и придется «стереть» его, а ведь он нужен для системы! У меня 7 32-система.
Или комп таким слабым и должен быть? Пожалуйста, не удаляйте вин-установщик.

Ну вообще оперативную память Windows-установщики не занимают (или я не понял, что вы имеете в виду). 1 Гб — действительно мало и многое у вас может просто не запускаться. Но если у вас правда 1 Гб оперативной памяти, то вы не можете что-то стереть, вам нужно добавлять ее (если есть такая возможность), т.е. устанавливать новые модули памяти.
В следующем комментарии вы пишете что эмуляторы Android не устанавливаются, тут кроме памяти еще один нюанс — если не ошибаюсь, они на 32-бит ни один и не работает.

Папка C:\Windows\Installer занимает более 35 ГБ Операционная система установлена в 2013 году и обновляется с тех пор. К сожалению, сайт недоступен. Но за наводку спасибо 🙂

cannot find c:\WINDOWS\installer folder in XP

Avast bootscan says I have a file infected with Kryptik-IWL Trojan and I cannot find either the c:\WNDOWSInstaller folder or the file using search including hidden files. Any ideas on what I should do next??

Were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue?

Unregister and re-register the Windows Installer.

a. Click Start, click Run, type “MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER” without quotes, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs.

b. Click Start, click Run, type “MSIEXEC /REGSERVER” without quotes, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs, or you may briefly see an hourglass. After you run this command, the operation is complete.

c. Restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

I would suggest you to refer the link to use the system file checker tool (sfc) to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files in Windows:

Try to run Microsoft Safety Scanner for any spyware or malware infection and check if it helps.

Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Thanks for the reply — not tried it yet as several probs with the PC. Only change prior to this happening was blue screen restarts, incomplete restart ie frozen and had to power down to get system to re-boot so it is in pretty much of a mess. I was going to re-install but tried EasyCleaner on the registry which has made restarts much cleaner. Midway through all this Avast showed Kryptik infection both on full scan which said it had been cleaned and then on boot scan which said it hadn’t & couldn’t. Asked Avast 2nd line for conf what I should do, did HJT run and they said I am clean but it still comes up as infected on a bootscan tho clean on full scan. Sorry for the long ramble but it has been going on about 3 weeks and the system is still v slow at times, Task’Manger shows main aps as SysIdle nd TeaTimer (MWare and Spybot also clean). Think that probably after 5 yrs it wil be best to reinstall and so have backed up all data over the w/end and cleaned out dupes.

If you’ve got other ideas please let me know

First, if you type the file path in search the same way you did in your initial post you will not find the folder as the file path is incorrect.

As for not being able to find «the file», which file are you looking for? If it is the malware file it is very possibly hidden and cannot be found using search.

The malware you list is often associated with the Alureon rootkit. This rootkit often creates it’s own partition. The only way to completely get rid of it is to delete the hidden partition.

This is what I would have you to do. Click HERE. Download aswMRB. This is an Avast scanner for rootkits. Since you already have Avast Anti-virus installed it will also use those definitions during the scan. Follow the directions on the screen for the download and scan. If you are unsure as to what to do if the scan detects malware leave it be and post back asking. Post a screen shot of the scanner window if this becomes the case.

Edit: In the mean time, do not run any temp file cleaners or otherwise empty temp files.

Apologies for typing in first post — searched on c:\WINDOWS\installer\11ac19.msp as this is what Avast asked me to find and delete. Then tried just the folder names but couldn’t, and can’t still find c:\WINDOWS\installer. Ran aswMRB and it only found a supicious file which I checked against a virus vault and it is aparently clean. Re-run Avast boottime and it now clean and Avast 2nd line say the system should be clean but I still am dubious.

However, I still have the issues of slow running and occasional hang/restart and so any help you can offer most appreciated. I am happy to reinstall XP and apps as I have the disks and 99% of data now backed up.

No apologies necessary. I was simply pointing out the file path was incorrect as a possible reason for your inability to locate the same.

After having used Avast products for a number of years I have yet to have it request I locate and delete a file. During the Avast boot scan you are given a number of choices upon a detection being made. None of which include requesting you manually locate and delete a file.

Before we proceed further I would like to see the Avast boot scan log file(s). To locate the log file click Start > Run > type or paste the below file path. Upon the opening of the file please copy and paste the contents of the log in your reply.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\report\aswBoot.txt file

It then went to 2nd level support and

please send me the hijackthis file

1) Download HiJackThis, save it onto your desktop (

2) Run HiJackThis and select «Do a system scan and save log file»

3) Send me the created log (it should be on your desktop with the name hijackthis.log, looks like text document) via e-mail as an attachment (not in message body) With this information and with the file hijackthis.log we’ll be able to help (hopefully).

Also please run full system scan with avast. Send me the avast scan report afterwards for inspection.

To send full system scan report go to the full system scan setting — report files and choose

— generate report file

— file name: fullScan

— report items — select everything except «ok items»

after the scan is done you will find the scan file in this directory C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\report

your system is clean according to the scan. To make sure run boot time please.

I ran boot scan on 11/6 (log above) and sent it to Avast and also a full scan which was clean then got,

please add file C:\WINDOWS\Installer\11ac19.msp to the chest.

Tried doing this as instructed but couldn’t find it — asked them and also re Error 42111 but no reply, ran full scan and boot scan both of which were clean. It is the lack of clarity on both the Error message and how the system has apparently been cleaned which makes me dubious. Sorry about sending War and Peace but thought rather than answering questions piecemeal I’d give you most of it. If you want other logs or the HJT log I’ve still got them.

Re slow running, it takes about 4-5 mins to boot up and Task Manager to calm down. It is mainly showing Sys idle, 90+%, then teatimer (I believe a spybot function), SVChost, iexplore, hpqst08 using 1-2% but if I change windows, open other apps or swop between IE screens it can sit and think a while. Also get hangs of mainly IE, but also Word and Outlook not closing properly and very occasionally blue screen restarts — «Your system has recovered from a serious error». Ran CHKdisk couple of months ago and nothing shown and as I said above ran EasyClean registry clean up which improved matters considerably. As the system is 5 years old running XP SP3, Office 03 and now sound breaks up both on Skype and listening to music/video and the DVD drive is acting up I thought I’d try a reinstall before dumping it and buying a new one! HD 100G, 78G used and RAM 2.5G. Grateful your thoughts.
