Samsung ML-1640 is an entry-level laser printer, with a maximum color print resolution of 1200 x 600 dpi, and a print speed of up to 16 ppm. The first copy comes in less than 10 seconds, and the print quality is average. The Samsung ML-1640 Toner Cartridge comes with a life of around 1500 prints and drums that have 10,000 pages of life.

This printer is not too compact and higher than most printers in a similar range. A 150-page capacity input tray is not covered and is very susceptible to dust, etc. 8MB RAM is standard and cannot be expanded, but it also helps in the first fast copy time. Connectivity is only via USB 2.0. A 500-page monthly duty cycle and introduction to the smaller Samsung ML-1640 Toner Cartridges with a 700-page lifetime, indicating its intention to target small homes and offices.

The ML-1640 printer supports duplex printing and is easy to use. The cartridge must be installed carefully and correctly; others will end up showing – there are no cartridges found – regularly. Packaged drivers and diagnostic software are handy and help in functions such as printing watermarks, overlays, and more.

That was very inspired for me!

I’ve found last SpliX 2.0.0.0 (many links, but the archive is the same — it doesn’t consist /usr folder in target.pkg — only Archive.pax.gz that I can’t gunzip | pax)

And I can’t compile SpliX from sources.

But now I have PPD file for ML-1640. That’s a big deal but still don’t work on installation process

Hello! I found the next solution for Samsung ML-1640.

I have MacBook Air M1 2020 with Mac OS Big Sur and Big Sur doesn’t support ML-1640 oficially.

To resolve this problem I installed virtual machine Parallels Desktop with Ubuntu Linux ARM Server 20.04.2 LTS.

Ubuntu OS recognized ML-1640 and installed drivers automatically.

With help of Parallels Desktop and Ubuntu Linux ARM Server 20.04.2 LTS my ML-1640 works fine.

Samsung ML-1640 driver

The print method for this device is the laser beam printing, which is classic for Samsung products. Furthermore, the print speed is up to 16 pages per minute (ppm) when printing on an A4 paper. Similarly, printing on a letter-size paper is at the rate of 17 ppm. Also, after issuing the command to print, the device takes less than 10 seconds from the active mode. However, the cold-boot mode will take less than 30 seconds.

Specifications

The printer resolution is 1200 x 600 dots per inch (dpi) at the maximum effectual output with the SPL print language. Samsung ML-1640 driver is also compatible with Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, 7, and Server 2008 versions. Apart from Windows OS, the other compatible versions include Linux RedHat 8.0-9.0, Mandrake 9.2-10.1, and SuSE. Nevertheless, for Macintosh users, the compatible versions are Mac OS 10.3 to 10.6. Also, the compatible interface is a full-speed USB 2.0 port.

The Samsung ML-1640 version of the printer allows an input tray capacity of 150 sheets for plain paper. More details of the printer paper load are available on the printer manual. On the other hand, the paper output capacity is about 50 sheets with an average weight of 20 lbs. This machine is also with a power rating within 110 to 127 volts or 220 to 240 volts. It also has a specific frequency range.

The power consumption of the printer largely depends on the print mode. For example, the active mode uses up to 70 watts of power, while the sleep mode requires 6 watts. The average operating mode power consumption is, however, less than 300 watts of power. It also produces a noise level of less than 26 dBA for the active mode and less than 50 dBA in the printing mode. At the same time, it tales a warm-up time of 25 seconds. Question: Q: I cant install my printer after the 11.01 macos Big Sur

Apple decided to make the laser printer Samsung CLP 360 series dysfunctional over a night. No drivers provided for this model that can work with macos Big Sur anymore. In HP they admit that they are unable to find drivers for my product https://support.hp.com/ie-en/drivers/selfservice/samsung-clp-360-color-laser-printer-series/17156859

CLP-360_Series_Mac_PrinterDriver_V5.02.00 were working fine with macos X 10.15 during the installation through Bonjour. But now they are not available anymore. I installed them by myself but the system can’t detect them. So the printer is not working.

Any kind of help it will be more than welcome.

I finally resolved the problem and this may help others that have the same issues with incompatible Samsung printers and drivers in Big Sur.

First check for your printer here Samsung — Printers compatible with macOS Catalina 10.15 it seems that these drivers work with Big Sur as well.

For the CLP-360 and CLP-365W compatible are the drivers for SL-C430W. You should download drivers for the macOS 10.15 Samsung Universal Print and Scan DriverV3.92.002 (Sep 16, 2020)

Install the drivers and a new list of printers is now available to system preferences.

While I can’t see the name of my printer there, I chose the second one but I checked 3 more and it seems that they work as well.

Apple is not responsible for third-party printer drivers. That is HP, who now owns the Samsung printer business, and may choose to prioritize newer printers for Big Sur support over older printers, and some printers will never receive newer drivers. Take that up with HP.

Your Samsung CLP-360 is not supported with Apple’s AirPrint either.

You are correct. The vendors must work together and most of them do. Apple had advised HP well in advance of the specific technical requirements of the upcoming Big Sur operating system, so the requirements were well known by HP. If HP declines to support Apple’s customers, that is on them. Apple does not, and can not write printer driver software for the thousands of printers out there around the world since they do not own or have access to the proprietary software code of each printer model. It is unfortunate that you have to have this experience.

I have a suggestion which may help you. Check the link below where volunteers have written code for many older models of printers which the vendors no longer support. There may be one that works for you.
