Combine multiple files into one file windows

How to merge or combine multiple files

If you would like to merge multiple Word, Excel or text files together, it can be done with relative ease and at no extra cost. Follow the steps below for the type of file you’re trying to merge.

For many users, it’s easier to copy and paste the contents of multiple files into a new file as a form of merging or combining files. See: How to copy and paste text in a document or another program.

Merging Microsoft Word documents

To merge Word documents, you can merge those documents within Microsoft Word itself. To do this, open the first file in Microsoft Word, and follow the steps for your version of Word. The steps are different because of the changes between the file menu and the Office Ribbon.

Microsoft Word 2007 or later (Ribbon)

In the Word Ribbon, click the Insert tab, click the down arrow next to Object, and select the Text from File option, as shown below.

Select the file you want to merge into the current document and click Insert. Once completed, the text and other information from the document will be merged into the current document. These steps can be completed as many times as you want if you want to merge multiple files.

If there are multiple files you want to merge at the same time, you can select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl and selecting each file you want to merge.

Microsoft Word 2003 or earlier (file menu)

In Word, click Tools in the top menu and select the Compare and Merge Documents option, as shown below.

Find the document you want to merge. You have the option of merging the selected document into the currently open document or merging the two documents into a new document. To choose the merge option, click the arrow next to the Merge button and select the desired merge option. Once complete, the files are merged.

If there are multiple files you want to merge at once, you can select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl and selecting each file you want to merge.

Merging Microsoft Excel files

To merge Microsoft Excel files together, it is best to save them as CSV files first. Open the Excel files and in the menu bar, click File, then Save As. In the Save as type drop-down list, select CSV (comma delimited) (*.csv) from the list.

Do this for each Excel file you want to merge, then place all the CSV files in the same folder. For ease, place them in a folder in the root of the C: drive (e.g., c:\csvfiles).

Open the Windows command prompt and navigate to the folder containing the CSV files. Type dir to view the files in the folder and ensure all the files are there.

Type in the following command to merge all CSV files in the folder into a new CSV file titled «newfile.csv» (any name could be used).

After the new file is created, open the new CSV file in Microsoft Excel and save it as an Excel file.

Merge a text (.txt) file in the Windows command line (MS-DOS)

Place each of the text files you want to merge in the same folder. For ease, place them in a folder in the root of the C: drive (e.g., c:\textfiles) and make sure the folder only contains text files you want to merge.

Before merging text files, you may want to make sure there is a blank line or at least one carriage return (pressing Enter ) to help separate each file.

Open the Windows command prompt and navigate to the folder containing the text files. Type dir to view the files in the folder and ensure all the files are there.

How to merge two files into one file

Type the following command to merge two text files into a new file or overwrite an existing file.

The above command would copy (merge) the contents of the file «first.txt» and «second.txt» into the new «third.txt» file.

How to merge all text files into one file

Type in the following command to merge all TXT files in the current directory into the file named newfile.txt (any name could be used).

Now you can open the text file and see everything merged together as one file.

Merge a file in the Linux command line

Linux users can merge two or more files into one file using the merge command or lines of files using the paste command.

Merge PDF files

PDF documents can also be merged. You can use a full version of Adobe Acrobat to do this, but this program is a bit pricy (several hundred dollars).

Another option is to find a free utility on the Internet to merge your PDF files. One of the better free utilities is PDF Split and Merge. It is an online tool that lets you merge two or more PDF files into one PDF file with a few clicks of your mouse button. You can also download and install a version of the Batch PDF Merger program, which costs about $30.

There are other free utilities online that offer this service. However, if there is any confidential information contained in the PDF files, use caution when merging them online. We recommend you use a utility on your computer for these types of PDF file mergers, to ensure the confidential data is kept confidential.

  • PDFMerge — Another great free utility to merge PDF documents.
  • Sej-da — An additional utility to merge PDF files up to 50 MB.

Combine multiple files into one using Windows Command Prompt

Combine multiple files into a single file is very simple on Windows as long as the files you are wanting to combine are text (binary). Its not possible to merge multiple images, videos and other none binary related content using this method. Here is the Command Prompt (cmd) command we will be using to achieve this.

We must use the /b attribute which tells the copy command that we are working with binary files. We then provide the file we wish to copy which in are case is “*.txt” which means every file which has the ending extension “.txt” and then the new location which is “combined.txt”.

You can replace .txt with what ever file extension is being used by your files and also change the name from combined.

Walkthrough

First we need to lunch Command Prompt (cmd) by going to “Start ->All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt”.

This may differ slightly on other Windows versions as I am suing Windows 7.

Now browse to the location where the files you want to combine are stored and click on the navigation bar. It is the area highlighted in red in the image below. You want to copy the text inside by “right clicking -> Copy”.

Now go to the cmd screen we loaded up at the beginning (the black console screen) and type

Combine PDFs into one document on Windows and Mac for free. Here’s how

You don’t need to pay for Adobe Acrobat to combine multiple PDFs. Here are two ways to do it.

Working with PDFs can be tricky, especially if you’re trying to merge multiple documents together. Maybe you’re constructing a portfolio, or maybe you just want to reduce file clutter. Whatever the reason, it can be confusing to keep lots of documents straight, but it’s also tricky to figure out how to bring them together.

One of the most popular tools for combining PDFs is Adobe Acrobat, but that software will cost you at least $13 a month for a subscription. Luckily, there are a few other ways you can combine PDFs for free, no matter what type of computer you’re using.

How to combine PDFs on Windows

If you’re using Windows, you’ll need a third-party app to help you combine PDFs. We tested a few, and found a solid option in PDF Merger & Splitter by AnywaySoft. It’s available through the Microsoft Store for free.

Here’s how to merge PDFs with this app:

  • Open the app, and choose Merge or Split. If you just need to merge two documents without changing the order of any pages, choose Merge.
  • Click Add PDFs, and select however many you want to merge. You have the option to move them up or down, or sort by name. You can also preview what the merged documents will look like.
  • Once your documents are in order, hit Merge, and name and save the new merged PDF.

If you want to customize your merger a bit more, such as by changing the order of pages or only adding in certain parts of each PDF, you’ll have to split them first. To do that, select Split when the app opens. Choose which individual pages or page ranges you want to pull out. You can save them as one PDF, or as individual PDFs.

How to combine PDFs on Mac

On Mac, you can combine PDFs with a built-in tool found in Preview, according to Apple Support.

Here’s how to combine two PDFs:

  • Open a PDF in Preview.
  • Go to View > Thumbnails. You’ll see page thumbnails in the sidebar.
  • Select the thumbnail for the page where you want to insert the other document.
  • Click Edit > Insert > Page from File (if the Page from File selection is dimmed so you can’t click it, make sure that the file you have open is a PDF. Some encrypted PDF documents can’t be merged, according to Apple. Check the permissions of a PDF by choosing Tools > Show Inspector, then click the lock icon).
  • Select the PDF you want to add, and click Open.
  • Choose File > Export as PDF to save.

And here’s how to combine parts of one PDF with another PDF:

  • Open the PDFs you want to combine in Preview.
  • In each document, choose View > Thumbnails. You’ll see page thumbnails in the sidebar.
  • Press and hold the Command key, and select the page thumbnails that you want to add to the other document. Let go of the Command key.
  • Drag the selected thumbnails to the sidebar of the other PDF, and release where you want them to go. (If you have macOS Sierra or earlier, drag the thumbnails directly into a thumbnail in the other PDF.)

You can rotate, delete and reorder pages from the thumbnail section, too.

How to Combine Multiple Registry Files into a Single One

Often in the articles that I write, I include various Registry files to save your time. They come with a number of changes in different root keys of the Registry. You can save your time even more by combining various Registry tweaks into a single file so you only have to merge that one file into the Registry. In this article, we will see how it can be done and how to make this process faster.

After this line, the *.reg file can contain comments and instructions to create, modify or delete keys and values.

Comments usually begin with the semicolon «;» symbol. They are useful when you need to document some change for other users. The Registry editor app ignores them.

Key paths are enclosed within square brackets.

Values are listed under the key path.

If a value is set to «-«, it will be deleted.

If a key path has «-» after the opening bracket, the entire Registry key will be deleted including all its subkeys.

Here is an example of a *.reg file with comments.

To combine multiple registry files into a single one, you need to open each file with Notepad (or with another text editor), copy everything after the first line and paste it into the resulting file, then save it with the *.reg extension. The combined file should also have the beginning line once to make Registry Editor recognize it as a genuine REG file.

It takes more time to copy each file’s contents and save all tweaks as a combined REG file. To speed this up, you can use Winaero Tweaker.

Starting with version 0.7.0.1, the app comes with a «Merge Reg Files» tool. Using its simple user interface, you can add the desired Registry files and combine them instantly by clicking on the «Merge» button.

See the following screenshot.
