Clipboard Formats

Free Clipboard Viewer lists the available formats for any data that is currently stored on the clipboard. It automatically updates the information displayed as the contents of the clipboard change. For any format you can also view the clipboard contents, size and description.

Clipboard formats can be viewed by selecting the required format in the left list.

Command Line Parameters

Clipboard Commands

A user typically carries out clipboard operations by choosing commands from an application’s Edit menu. Following is a brief description of the standard clipboard commands.

Cut Places a copy of the current selection on the clipboard and deletes the selection from the document. The previous content of the clipboard is destroyed. Copy Places a copy of the current selection on the clipboard. The document remains unchanged. The previous content of the clipboard is destroyed. Paste Replaces the current selection with the content of the clipboard. The content of the clipboard is not changed.

Standard Clipboard Formats

The clipboard formats defined by the system are called standard clipboard formats. These clipboard formats are described in the following table.

Text	Text format. Each line ends with a carriage return/linefeed (CR-LF) combination. A null character signals the end of the data. Use this format for ANSI text.
Unicode Text Format	Unicode text format. Each line ends with a carriage return/linefeed (CR-LF) combination. A null character signals the end of the data.
Rich Text Format	Rich Text Format RTF.
HTML Format	HyperText Markup Language Format. HTML is entirely text format (to be, among other things, in the HTML spirit, and uses UTF-8) and includes a description, an optional context, and, within the context, the fragment.
OEM Text	Text format containing characters in the OEM character set. Each line ends with a carriage return/linefeed (CR-LF) combination. A null character signals the end of the data.
Locale Identifier	The data is a handle to the locale identifier associated with text in the clipboard. When you close the clipboard, if it contains CF_TEXT data but no CF_LOCALE data, the system automatically sets the CF_LOCALE format to the current input language.
Bitmap	A handle to a bitmap (HBITMAP).
Enhanced Metafile	A handle to an enhanced metafile (HENHMETAFILE).
Metafile Picture Format	Handle to a metafile picture format as defined by the METAFILEPICT structure.
Microsoft Symbolic Link Format	Microsoft Symbolic Link (SYLK) format.
Data Interchange Format	Software Arts» Data Interchange Format.
Tagged-image File Format	Tagged-image file format.
Bitmap DIB	A memory object containing a BITMAPINFO structure followed by the bitmap bits.
Bitmap DIBV5	A memory object containing a BITMAPV5HEADER structure followed by the bitmap color space information and the bitmap bits.
Color Palette	Handle to a color palette. Whenever an application places data in the clipboard that depends on or assumes a color palette, it should place the palette on the clipboard as well.
Data for The Pen Extensions	Data for the pen extensions to the Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing.
Complex Audio Data RIFF	Represents audio data more complex than can be represented in a CF_WAVE standard wave format.
Wave	Represents audio data in one of the standard wave formats, such as 11 kHz or 22 kHz Pulse Code Modulation (PCM).
List of Files	A handle to type HDROP that identifies a list of files. An application can retrieve information about the files by passing the handle to the DragQueryFile functions.
Owner-display Format	Owner-display format. The clipboard owner must display and update the clipboard viewer window, and receive the WM_ASKCBFORMATNAME, WM_HSCROLLCLIPBOARD, WM_PAINTCLIPBOARD, WM_SIZECLIPBOARD, and WM_VSCROLLCLIPBOARD messages.
Text Display Dormat	Text display format associated with a private format.
Bitmap Display Format	Bitmap display format associated with a private format.
Metafile-picture Display Format	Metafile-picture display format associated with a private format.

Free Clipboard Viewer is an application that allows you to see the data that is currently copied into the Windows Clipboard. The Clipboard is a utility in Windows that allows you to store information into it that can be then pasted into another application or location. Using the Free Clipboard Viewer you will be able to see exactly what was copied into your clipboard and detailed information about the copied data.

This is a very niche application and since you can only store one item at a time into the application, most people who use the Window Clipboard know exactly what is inside it. The power of this tool, though, comes in the variety of ways the data you copied is represented inside the Free Clipboard Viewer application.

For example, when copying an image you can see the image and a hexadecimal view of the image as if you were using a hex editor. When you copy text, not only does the viewer show the text you copied, but also any html that may have been copied, and its unicode representation.

For those who want a more robust and feature-rich Clipboard utility, you can update to the paid version of this program called Comfort Clipboard Pro. The Pro version includes many other features such as a history of all items stored in the clipboard, more ways to manipulate the data stored in it, and the ability to search for historic clippings.

How to View & Manage Clipboard in Windows 10

When you copy or cut or move data, it is held temporarily in an invisible portion of memory. This is called as the ClipBoard. The clipboard enables applications to transfer data or between applications or within an application.

Windows XP had clipbrd.exe, referred to as the Clipboard Viewer or the ClipBook Viewer, which could be used to see what was saved on your clipboard. If you try to search for this exe file in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10, you will be unable to find clipbrd.exe.

Clipboard in Windows 10

In Windows XP clipbrd.exe was situated in C:\Windows\System32\clipbrd.exe. It is now missing as a part of the Windows 10/8/7 installation. You can try to copy it from a Windows XP installation, if you have access to it, and paste it into your System32 folder. In most cases, this is known to work.

In Windows 10, you can make use of the Cloud Clipboard History feature.

Clipboard alternatives

The Windows Clipboard is very basic in nature and does not offer many features. As a result, many free Clipboard alternatives like ArchiveClipboard, Enhanced Clipboard Manager, CopyCat, Clipboardic, Orange Note, Ditto, Clipboard Magic, etc., are available on the Internet.

You may also try this freeware Karens Clipboard Viewer. This application allows you to look inside your Windows clipboard.

Clipboard UWP apps for Windows 10

Clipboard app for Windows 10 will allow you to share it to and from your clipboard. This is especially useful for bridging desktop applications with Windows Runtime applications that support sharing features. There are also other UWP apps like Clipa.Vu, Clipboard Plus, Clipboard+, and Clipboard Circle can act as clipboard managers.

Incidentally, Clip.exe is a different file, which is a part of Microsoft Word/Office Clip Organizer. It is a cmd command. And rdpclip.exe is the main executable for File Copy, which allows you to copy and paste between server and client.

Windows Snipping Tool may also be considered as a variation of sorts. It lets you copy any portion of any screen, make notes and then copy it to the Clipboard as a graphic, save it as a graphics or an HTML file and/or send it by email. But you cannot view the clipboard with it.

There is no first-party clipboard viewer, so 3rd party is it.

Well there’s a low-tech solution though: just open WordPad and press Paste to see whatever is currently on the clipboard 🙂

astonishingly stupid way to find it, only microsoft would come up with this

This does NOT «clear» clipboard contents, only displays the text. smh

So 3rd party intrusive software, or *sign out* vs shut down / restart?

Significant insecure loophole to leave running & why hasn’t it been fixed via the mythical all-Solving continuously improving Win10 Updating process.

I already use WordPad between Edge and Office 365, otherwise it takes seconds to minutes to cut and paste from the web, even small amounts of text.

This thread doesn’t address why my clipboard, on Win 10, is not allowing new copy.

I am not sure what you mean by «Windows 10». That could mean an application that works in phones, tablets, XBoxes and PC desktops. Or it could mean PC desktop Windows applications that also work in Windows 10.

I found Free Clipboard Viewer for Windows. It is a basic clipboard viewer that shows what formats are in the clipboard and shows a preview. If the person that created this thread needs more than that then it helps to say so in the question. Anyone else that needs more or something different should create a question that is specific.
