Cisco Packet Tracer 6.3 on Fedora 24

The cisco packettracer 6.3 is available for GNU/Linux under the next requirements:

• x86 libraries.
• nss and ssl libraries.
• QT4 script-tools, WebKit and QT3 backward support.
• (Optional ) Cisco NetSpace account.

We need install x86 libraries (32 bits) if our system is x86_64 (64bits) as follows:

Cisco Packet Tracer 6.3 will be downloaded from Cisco Networking Academy Portal or in another places on internet, only ask to google for “PacketTracer63_linux.tar.gz”,

After accept the EULA, the installation begins, we need set the environment variables with the next command:

At this point packettracer is ready to use but another useful thing to do is create a desktop Cisco Packet Tracer icon to launch it, first download the icon:

With our favorite plain text editor we will create the file /usr/share/applications/packettracer.desktop as follows:

Now we will run Cisco Packet Tracer 6.3 from our Desktop:

gracias por tu ayuda, me la pase dos días tratando de instalar la versión 7 pero nunca me funcionó tuve que descargar la versión 6.3

yo me he salteado esta parte $ sudo /opt/pt/set_ptenv.sh porque cuando hice eso me salia error que no podía encontrar la ruta, así que seguí con lo que recomendaba la instalación solo le di enter para que creara el enlace simbólico y de alli solo crear el packettracer.desktop con un .png que tu pusiste para enlazarlo. gracias y saludos desde Lima – Perú

No y gracias a ti, me habia quedado en que la 6.3 ara la ultima versión, en breve probare la instalación de la versión 7, esperando tenerla lista si quieres actualizar.

Las librerías a instalar tienes que ser las i686? No funcionará con las x86_64? Saludos

Asi es, nota que la versión 6.3 solo es para i686 no hay para x86_64, entonces todas su bibliotecas son para i686, si quieres probar algo mas nuevo y que si corre en x86_64 revisa para la versión 7.0, saludos.

Running Cisco Packet Tracer in Linux

Packet Tracer is Cisco Network Simulation Software that is natively available for Micro$oft Windows users only. But thanks to Wine project we can use it in Linux as well.

Packet Tracer is a self-paced, visual, interactive teaching and learning tool. It is designed to increase interaction between students and instructors, promote student learning, and enhance instructor presentations. This technology is a new and fun way to expand teaching and learning experiences beyond the limitations of a traditional lab environment. Packet Tracer helps resolve some common challenges that instructors face on a daily basis, while enabling us to explore new frontiers in networking education.

To install Wine just use package manager of your Linux distro or compile it from sources. For example, to install Wine on Ubuntu that is my preferred distribution, it’s enough to run command: sudo aptitude install wine (Fedora users should run sudo yum install wine and so on). Before use Wine I recommend to get familiar with this howto.

After Wine is installed, just run winecfg with your favorite terminal emulator like gnome-terminal and set up Wine as you wish. Actually you can leave setting as they are but first run of winecfg is necessary after installation of Wine (it will create folder

/.wine that will contain Windows applications you install and run).

To install Packet Tracer 4.1 (or any other version) just run:
wine /path/to/PacketTracer_setup.exe
and proceed installation as you’re running it with Windows. Errors like:

fixme:reg:GetNativeSystemInfo (0x34fea0) using GetSystemInfo()
fixme:process:IsWow64Process (0xffffffff 0x34fe9c) stub!
fixme:advapi:CheckTokenMembership ((nil) 0x170240 0x34fe1c) stub!

are usual thing when you run Windows applications with Wine.

After installation is finished you can run Packet Tracer by clicking on shortcut that was created by Setup program or run:
wine

/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Packet\ Tracer\ 4.1/bin/PacketTracer4.exe
(depends on which path you’ve chosen during the setup procedure).

And that’s it, you can use Packet Tracer in Linux now!

hi, packet tracer works perfect in ubuntu 7.10, but it had a couple of issues in 7.04 (crashing when trying to exit, etc.)

maybe cisco can release a linux version in the near future!

in Packet tracer help you’ll find that minimum request is also flash 6.0. As i’m aware of there is no flash in wine…

However it works nice but wine shows lot of errors in console…

And I don’t think Cisco cares for a Linux-Version..the program looks so nested inside windows I think, don’t know why.

But maybe..if the really is flash-based like confiq says maybe theres a chance.

Anyway…who cares…no serious network admin really uses linux.. ..right?? 😉

However tutorial is in flash but not a program. Pity they don’t support linux so much

i’ve a problem with the toolbar and diagram. When packet tracer is started it show no picture in the tool bar; even though you can click the areas at the tool bar. The same problem happen in the diagram. any devices will show no picture, like there is no devices insert into the diagram.

I’m having the same problem as pakciktua, i’m using wine 0.9.9 and packet tracer 4.11

Im using a p4 2.8, 1gb ram, simply mepis linux distro.

Im gonna try previous version of packet tracer.

I have the Packet tracer 4.11 running under Ubuntu 7.10 / wine however there are minor issues like not being able to cut and past text from switch/router windows.

hi,,do know how to isntall packet tracer using SuSE? i did like yours but nothing. Even i created the directory by myself, because when i type winecfg it would be some error.

If you haven’t already got this working I simply loaded wine. After you load wine the packet tracer install is the same as it would be on a Windows box.

hi, i’m running Ubuntu 8.04. i didn’t like running packet tracer on wine due to the errors i encountered. the simplest thing i did is to install it on a windows xp running on my virtualbox (free virtualization) together with other apps that needs windows. this is another option. cheers!

Problem: I’m enrolled in a class that needs to use Packet Tracer for my school work. Cisco provides a Linux package, but its a Debian package (deb).

Tried to use alien to convert from .deb to .rpm, but found this solution for Packet Tracer 7.3. Adapted for Packet Tracer 8 on Fedora 33.

Starting point:

Hey, thanks a lot, I managed to finally install it, just a thing though, you should add the cd data at line 27, just after the tar commands. I didn’t know why it wasn’t working, until I read the original article you had listed and found that command. Also, that final step from the original article about compiling the libjpeg library is pretty useful for the complete functionality of the PacketTracer.

This worked perfectly, minus that the new PacketTracer has now renamed the folder in /opt/pt to just packettracer so after a slight adjustment, it launches perfectly

Summary, for any new person who stumbles upon this

Step 2 -Once logged into netacad, at the top of the links click:

• Resources > Download Cisco Packet Tracer

Step 3 — Scroll down until you find:

• Ubuntu Desktop Version 8.0.1 English 64 Bit Download
• Download the .deb file

Step 4: Navigate to where you downloaded the .deb file:

• Right click a blank area in the folders section, select «Open in Terminal»
• FROM THE TERMINAL, COPY AND PASTE:
  mkdir
