Official Arch Linux Wallpapers

Dear Arch Linux users, developers, trusted users, bug wranglers, forum fellows, makers of artwork and other contributors,

The archlinux-wallpaper package we have in [community] is old and crusty. The resolutions are low and the style is not up to date.

Since Arch has never been afraid to move forward, the plan is to replace all those images with new and fresh artwork.

Please submit your very best Arch Linux related wallpaper here, with a resolution of 5120×2880. You can also include other resolutions if you like, but the plan is to keep the package size relatively low (maximum 20MB for a collection of several resolutions of a single wallpaper).

The license should be CC0, or something that makes it similarly easy to distribute the wallpaper.

Bonus points if the 5120×2880 version of the image is under 1 MB!

According to the wiki, the core principles of Arch Linux are: simplicity, modernity, pragmatism, user centrality and versatility. It would be nice if the wallpapers would reflect this somehow.

Bonus points for creating it with Blender, Gimp, Krita, Inkscape or another application that is available as an Arch Linux package.

The graphical style should be as modern and/or timeless as possible, so that we can use it for many years ahead. Think 2020 and beyond. I searched the web for «graphic design trends 2020», but did not feel any wiser.

I’ll hand pick 10 of the contributions in a horribly unfair, subjective and biased way, then replace the contents of the archlinux-wallpaper package and push that to [community].

If there are big flaws in my thinking or process here, please let me know!

I’m looking forward to seeing the contributions.

The contest will run for up to 10 years (until 2030-10-06), if need be, but I expect there to be enough contributed wallpapers by then.
